Why? Are you fore some reason shocked Cotto made it to the final round against Mayweather who's power is respectable at his most recent weight, but he's not by any streach of the imagination a knock out artist. It was never a compitive bout. Sure Cotto had moments in the middle rounds. Never enough to really win them. Cotto has a tendancy to fade late, and Mayweather won the late rounds. This can be atrubuited to Mayweather stepping up, but with Cotto's history. You never really know. Bottom line Cotto is a good even very good but not great boxer. He was never at any time a threat to beat Mayweather during the fight. He didn't expose anyone for anything. He never forced Mayweather to answer questions that he couldn't answer. Yes he was game, and as I said he had moments. All which were answered by Mayweather. The 117-111 scores were the best scores Cotto earned. Even 118-110 was on the genourus side.
Because the majority of boxing fans are dumb and think that one or two losses ruin a fighter forever with no ability to adapt or change strategies.

Cause it was reasonable to expect that Cotto would be physically not very much up to it after the Margo fights and specially due to the psychological effect Manny produced on him. But he showed his pride and fought his heart out and that is more than expected. Most analysts were sayin that there was no advantage whatsoever to fight at this weight in terms of speed/strength/style match so he did better. Of course that there was a serious debate about if the scorecards should have been closer or not but the Mayweather victory is unquestionable.
he wasnt suppose to handle floyd like that. floyd was suppose to dominate him. cotto has seen better days since his wars with pac and cheato. but, he has seemed to rejuvenate his career with a new trainer and attitude
Cotto didn't actually have an exceptional offensive performance. He landed only 21% of his shots which isn't a good score. Yes, a few nice jabs did affect Floyd but that's nothing to brag about. He isn't flawless so obviously he's going to get hit. Again, he held his opponent to a low connect percentage so overall he still did well defensively despite getting tagged a few times. As for the bloody nose, how come nobody talks about Cotto's facial injuries? He also received a bloody nose and a badly swollen eye.
Believe me Cotto asked for the 10 oz gloves for a reason and it showed those right hands landing would of did more damage if those were 8 oz gloves.
Stylistically most felt Floyd was all wrong for Miguel and was tailor made for Floyd. Cotto was always a good fighter but JMM is great and Floyds style made to make JMM look like he was a sparring partner. Cotto made every round ultra competitive but most rounds Floyd did just enough to win.....the cards reflected that aspect vs the one where it would indicate a one sided fight.
Cotto won at least 3 rounds. He made every round competitive. Floyd never dominated him. I think that should answer your question.
:deal The only round in which Cotto was truly outclassed was the 12th. Compare that to when floyd fought mosley and marquez in which they were outclassed the entire fight and you can see why he did better than excepted.
He did better than I expected. I expected him to win 3 rounds at the most and I had him winning 4. The rounds he did lose, I didn't expect him to be that competitive and close. He did better because I expected Cotto to get dominated much the same way Floyd dominated Shane Mosley.
