Pernell Whitacker. I wasn't surprised that he gave Chavez so much trouble, but I was surprised that he was able to at times manhandle or "outmuscle" Chavez. He even hurt Chavez a few times.

I think I'll throw in Alan Minter. He didn't have the muscularity of an Antuofermo, Hagler or Hamsho, but he sure as hell threw Vito around like a rag doll in their rematch. Nobody ever questioned his physical strength back in the day. He did appear to be physically stronger than Marv, but it's a punching sport, and cut resistance can be pretty crucial as well, as it turns out. Alan didn't go after Hamsho, but neither did Mustafa push him around.

 

Andre Ward gets my vote. Not a puncher at all but his overall physical strength really seems to surprise his opponents.

 

Vicente Saldivar is the first guy that came to my mind.

Routinely bossed around featherweights despite appearing nothing more than a midget.

 

Matt Skelton lacks any sort of muscle definition whatsoever, but is by all accounts as strong as an ox.

Look, if you saw him in the flesh in his prime, you'd be blind or crazy to say he's not "physically imposing".

 

For heavyweights, I'd say Larry Holmes was relatively ordinary-looking with his skinny legs, and sloping shoulders, but his physical strength in the ring was off the scale.
