:bart...Maidana is a better version of Rios IMO. He's beaten better opponents... He's got heavier hands and he has the superior chin...all proven at a higher weight class. The only elite level JWWs I can see Rios being competitive with is Peterson.

Rios is anything but a crude brawler. Brandon by nature is a counter puncher and as with most counter punchers they need their opponents to cooperate and give them something to counter. Also, you like many before you underestimate Brandon's defensive skills. Brandon is very hard to hit cleanly. He rolls with punches well and as we all know he has a rock solid chin. Brandon takes the first two rounds to feel his opponent out. He then adjusts to that opponents skills and strengths and yes, his weaknesses and then he counters accordingly. In the fight with Abril, Abril gave Rios very little to counter. Abril fought a very safe fight and he too acted as a counter puncher. Rios had to press the action and hope the Abril would give him some sort of reaction to counter off of. Abril has the sort of style to make any opponent look bad. We all now know why Abril only has 9 kos. He does not throw any punch with bad intentions.

The exception is and to somewhat agree with your "brawler" comparision is when Rios has someone hurt or if he gets stunned by an opponents punch. Rios has been trained from day one (and we still train boxers this way) that if an opponent lands a good shot then you land two. To punch with your opponent and to work with what they give you. To stay in the center of the ring and constantly move forward and to back your opponent up. NEVER go backwards and NEVER fight off the ropes. Brandon is a very well trained, disciplene and schooled boxer.

Guys like Rios have short careers. He gets hit way too much and when he goes up in weight, those guys punch a lot harder than lightweight guys. I can't see him being a force.

We will see but for man that according to you "gets hit too much" he has never taken a beating in the ring or been closed to being stopped. I have no doubt that Brandon at 140 and above will amaze all of us. Even me.

I'm not sure his power would really translate well all the way up to light middleweight (assuming that's what is meant by "152"..) :think

The opinion of a friend? He loss 10 out of 12 rounds, Abril deserved to win no matter how you call his style, when you lose 10 rounds out 12, you don't deserve to have a W on your record, nothing that Abril did was illegal and when the ref warn him he stop beside all the clinches were started by Rios, his lack of foot work and no sense of distance make him fall in Abril's guard every time he came forward, what happen next I don't know, I wish him well even thought I think he is an A$$hole, his mockering of Roach sickness didn't sit well with me and thousands of fans, but everybody have a right to make a living, at 140 he will not have the excuse of being drained and if he was an off night and he can comeback more power to him, but you don't do any favor to him by down playing Abril's performance which was a thing of beauty for fans that appreciate that kind of boxing...
PS. Instead of bitching he should come out and say it, I loss to Abril and I'll give him a rematch at 140, after all Richard has say he will go up in weight to fight him.

He might be a force at 152, but could he dethrone the 150 king Manny Pacquiao?

Everybody has a weakness and Rios Kryptonite is a technician with stamina, he say that Abril's got him good a few times to me that mean that he fell his punches... Nothing wrong with losing a fight, with his style he will have a few more, believe me, the only one that I know with a come forward style that never loss was Marciano, and he have a gift on his resume.

I consider Rios a technician in the boxing ring. He can normally adjust to an opponent's style and systomactically break an opponet down. The one exception thus far has been Abril.
