The country is happy. Let them have something to cheer about. It may even promote boxing after all

The more countries that get into boxing, the better.

I think people are missing the point here. (at least, what I'm taking away from it)

This isn't about mocking a developing country trying to rally behind something positive. If that were the case, it would be a thread that belonged in the Lounge with all the other crap.

To me it's more an indictment of these dime a dozen sanctioning bodies.

Say what you will about the Big Four, but their rankings don't include any Jonathan Pasi's.

Teddy Atlas wants a national commission to oversee boxing in the US. I'll see him his national commission and raise the stakes - there should be an international commission and standardization of rules across all of licensed professional boxing.

Upon formation, said commission should decree the termination of all sanctioning bodies outside the big 4 - and cooperate with local commission across the world to see that they are in fact stamped out permanently. No new ones shall be formed thereafter.

It shouldn't be the case that just anybody can call their self a "world champion". These ******* jack belts are a big part of what hurts boxing. Yeah, yeah - it's bad that there are even a Big Four instead of one clear champion in each division. That doesn't mean we should just say "ah the hell with it" and let everything run rampant to the point where there's a hundred sanctioning bodies each with their own so-called "world champion".

If you beat every other heavyweight in your little hamlet in France, or if you clean up the whole Middle Eastern middleweight division, or if you're the best super bantamweight in the former Soviet Union - guess what? You aren't a ****ing world champion. You're a regional champ. You shouldn't be able to include the word "world" in your title if it isn't under the auspices of one of the Big Four, who (again, say what you will about them) have the ONLY credible rankings out of the umpteen counterfeit operations floating around.

What an ******* thread. Who could hate on this guy? Of course his belt means ****, but let the **** country have something. And sure, I'm an ******* for calling it a **** country.

..at least, that's what I think it should be about. I only skimmed the OP but to me this is the relevant takeaway from it as far as it being posted on the boxing forum. I don't really care about anything the TS was trying to say if it wasn't along the lines of the above.

Well good for afghanistan and I wish the guy well but it is sad because "WORLD" champ used to mean something. It used to mean you are the best in the WORLD in your weight class. The entire planet....

Yes it's a joke he's seen as a world champion but like most have said, I think this goes beyond boxing. Afghans have seen their fair share of brutality, so if this dude inspires them and brings something positive to what is probably the most ****ed up nation in modern history, I say good luck to them.

Why? For exposing a fraud, painting himself as a national hero, when he isn't one?

That's pretty much what I was trying to say, along with this guy being a bit of a dick for proclaiming himself a world champion and national hero.

National heroes are relative to the nation. I think this dude qualifies as something of a national hero for Afghanistan.
