You realize that the profit margins directly tie to the cost of the PPV event, right? I'm...it's really simple math to figure out the profits based on a set amount that the even was going for.

What business and share holders care about is the ROI. And when numbers go over a million the people who have a stake in the company most definitely review those numbers with a fine tooth comb. They won't just take the word of a Promoter.

The 1.25 million buy total represents the highest performing pay-per-view event in 2008 and generated $70 million in pay-per-view revenue. It is only the fourth time in boxing pay-per-view history that a non-heavyweight event has attained the one million buy mark.

“Boxing fans across America showed tremendous support for this event and we’re pleased that they tuned in,” said Mark Taffet of HBO Pay-Per-View.

De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao will be replayed this Saturday, Dec. 13 at 4:45 p.m. ET/ 1:45 p.m. PT on HBO. There will be a same day replay at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. The exclusive replay of Pacquiao’s impressive triumph will be paired with the live heavyweight title fight from Mannheim, Germany as Wladimir Klitschko meets challenger Hasim Rahman.

at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.

The 1.5 million buy total generated $94 million in pay-per-view revenue.

The performance of Mayweather-Cotto ranks as the second highest grossing non-heavyweight pay-per-view event in boxing history. No. 1 all-time is Mayweather’s record-setting showdown with Oscar de la Hoya ($137 million) in 2007.

Mayweather owns a perfect 43-0 record as a professional prizefighter.

I wonder why it took them more than a month to release the Floyd/Ortiz numbers ( not official )and Floyd/Cotto less than a week?:think

Not at all, because the money made from the PPV sales is not all takings for HBO, they have to pay off the money they spent setting it up. Also it wont include their tax. Also it wont include the money that gets paid directly to employees involved in the PPV.

You are right though, they will review with a fine tooth comb, but not in the public domain. It dosnt matter to those people what Bob says, only that Pac stays on HBO for future shows

Shareholders dont get their figures from Press releases, and most of financial information is private and only available to those concerned.

That's true but Richard Schaefer specifically said they were official numbers and released the revenue.
Bob has only give estimates and he even says so in his quotes. plus he never releases the revenue And that makes it more suspect.
yes especially when he says the fight COULD reach a certain number
Nobody on the site expected that much. this fight did exactly as good as i thought. it made more money though than predicted.
Except nobody said it did 850 except for a random guy on twitter

"PROFITS".....meaning the money that is pocketed by the company/share holders. The "REVENUE" is what monies are made as a whole for the event or deal.

"ROI"....the Return on Investment is basically the PROFIT or "Bottom line". But all this PPV talk is for US.....the fans. To gauge how our sport is doing from a profitablilty stand point. If boxers can put up numbers like these then that means the sport is healthy and will continue to thrive.

Thats what ive been saying :patsch

The business with the investors is done behind closed doors, not in the public domain

So you talking about investors calling Arum out has nothing to do with anything

hbo is not a publicly traded company, it is a subsidiary of time warner which is a publicly traded company

time warner share holders couldnt care less about how many buys a fight generates ... they care about the total revenue brought in from hbo's boxing division and how much it costs to operate that unit

the shareholders care about big ratings for non ppv hbo, because that means hbo can turn around and charge the cable/satellite providers more to carry their network due to the demand for the network. thats where hbo makes the bulk of its revenue ... ppv is a completely different because bigger ratings (buys) are only worth the revenue that it brings in

    Knuckle up,

The PAC v JMM III fight did just over $70 million in revenue generated on TV. Less than Mayweather v Mosley or Ortiz. This would put the actual buys in the 1.25-1.3 range, which ALL industry insiders agree it did. This is stl an amazing number and nothing to be ashamed of. However, to try and argue it was 1.4 or more is ridiculous.

HBO did release official numbers for Mayweather v Ortiz. It did 1.25 million buys and generated $78 million in revenue, making it bigger than the $75 million Mayweather v Mosley did with an official 1.4 million ppv buys.

You cannot trust Arums numbers, just like you cannot trust Shaefers. However, Mayweathers numbers are official from HBO.
