Early rounds: Calz comes out hard, Jones dazzles him with speed and uses his aggression against him.

Mid rounds: Calz, frustrated, makes adjustments and some boxing occurs. Close rounds that Roy steals by showboating periodically.

Late rounds: Roy break dances circles around Calz, pot shotting him at will.

 

I apologize only because you are one of the few people on this site who are not a giant nuthugger who worships fighters they like. but the fact remains and always will, hopkins and jones are all-time greats without calzaghe. remove hopkins from calzaghe and he is not close to it. the thought that he could struggle with 43 year old hopkins and then fight prime roy jones even at his own prime is laughable. a great fighter, no doubt. in the league of a prime jones? not at all.

 

As to the question of how was Roy different from the Hall to the Calzaghe fight, the main deteriorations were the loss of foot speed, lateral movement, reflexes and stamina. The hand speed was also slowed down but was still excellent. Most people just see the quick hands and might think he still had it because his hands were still quick, but his style was huge on using his quick feet, athleticism, and reflexes for defense. When those went down hill he didnt have Toney or Hopkins like defense to see him through. It's pretty impressive Roy was so dominant until he was 35 with his style. Part of what made Roy so hard to beat and so great was that he did everything "wrong", but was so supremely gifted that he could get away with it. There is no way to prepare for the speed and crazy punches because no one else was even close to being able to pull off some of the things Roy could. Once those gifts faded it made him much more vulnerable. The loss of confidence Roy had after getting KTFO by Tarver and Johnson didn't help his cause either.

When we say "prime" RJJ i assume we mean "Roid" Jones Jr, right? in which case, yes, he would win.

take him off the juice (tarver fight....first time off juice in years....) and Calzaghe slaps the hell out of him even at his (natural) physical peak.

 

Amazing how all thses people claim Jones was shot yet cant explain the post below.
People say Roy was shot when Calzaghe beat him but show me where he was so different there to when he failed a test against R Hall and where the hand speed was so different. The difference was Jones was facing someone who could match him for speed and had a bit more ring generalship. Hall couldnt close the gaps like Calzaghe also Calzaghes foot movement was causing Jones problems

No doubt there will be some that say well if you cant tell the difference, but let them explain.
Nobody can tell me the difference in Jones, but you can see the difference between Calzaghe and Hall and that seemed to make a big difference.

How can Jones go from 'prime' to 'shot' in the matter of a few months!? His legs didn't just suddenly go overnight.

 

The weight thing is one of the biggest myths around.

 

I like Joe, but he'd have absolutely no hope at all against Roy.
Roy was infinitely faster, punched much harder and was simply as good as its ever been at his best.
Im pretty sure Joe said in his book he was afraid of Roy.
Shot Roy could have stopped Joe had he realised how badly he'd hurt him when they did fight.

 

If we're talking about Roid Jones, the steroid cheat, then Jones UD. Roidless Jones would get owned.
