I didn`t want to put this in the general as it would no doubt end up in a floyd/pac fucfest after about 6 posts... & I realise we have had 100s of Duran v Pea threads here but this is not a H2H thing, its about overall skill.

I`ve read on here before posters saying Duran might have the most complete set of skills ever, I`ve also read likewise about Whitaker... I also know the high praise both men receive in the classic section.

I`d like the classic opinion as to who you think is the more overall skilled fighter between these 2 excellent & complete fighters.

    :good

I always think guys who combine technique with athleticism have a much more obvious edge in skill department.

By that if you watch both and take it face value pea would probably look the more skilled.

I'm sure duran does a lot of subtle things that idiots like me don't pick up on but i'm gonna go with the more aesthetically obvious sweet pea.

It's a hard question and apples and oranges in a way. Both are very skilled but very different stylistically. Ultimately I think Whitaker could do more, he could come forward when needed to aswell stick and move or counter punch. HE was excellent infighter and out fighter. Duran's defence while great isn't up there with Whitaker, neither is his use of the ring really.

I suppose some will question how much of Whitaker's skill was reflex based, but that's still a skill to learn.

I think Whitaker maybe the best angle user of all time

Duran for me. I certainly have great respect for defensive artists like pea, Locche, and Benitez (and pea is the most offensive of those three). But I just give credit to someone like Duran who is displaying massive skill while selling out on his punches and trying to take someone's head off.

Both were really complete fighters, I edge it to Whitaker simply because he looked comfortable doing everything in the ring & against any style, Duran didn`t look like himself vs guys that gave him lateral movement & were good defensive boxers & I`ve never seen him fight off the back foot or use great lateral movement himself.

Don`t get me wrong, I rank Duran higher than Whitaker & might lean towards him in a peak v peak match (thats a tough one to call actually) but Whitaker just seemed to have everything except knockout power, special fighter.

It's an almost impossible call, made all the harder because they were vastily different in terms of style. Either pick is fine by me.

Take away power, strength and tenacity and the answer is Whitaker.

Do people really think Duran beats more guys than Whitaker WITHOUT being superior in these qualities?

P.S. Left in speed and reflexes because I think they are roughly equal in these departments.
