Sugar Ray as an Amateur

The Cuban southpaw he beat in the Olympic final was an absolute beast. He went on to beat Mugabi at the next games for Gold.

 

Firstly he's clearly not the finished article at this point for me, as good as he is in that footage he's a little too reckless. You can see with the footage we have of him from the late 40s, early 50s he's far more controlled in the ring, picking his time when to explode into action.

The first thing that stands out to me there is that every single punch he's throwing is done so with mean intentions. He's looking to cause damage and get that knock out punch at any stage. His range of punching for someone just turned 19 is scary, putting combinations together that a veteran would struggle to do.

The way he gets leverage into the punches is top notch, and the natural speed is of course there which would be a key component in his skillset when he turned professional. He's already as dangerous an attacking force as this stage as almost anything you'll see, but he as i said above became more controlled and polished with experience.

Well, as a lightweight in the golden gloves he looked sloppy but showed incredible potential, natural athleticism and fighting instinct, super fast hands and clout. Growing into his physique he mastered his style.

Those feet are just amazing. The poise he had in positioning his feet in balance while moving and turning into his punches always impresses me and stands out more than most of his attributes.
