How do people have the nerve to say Harry Greb would be competitive in any era?

I used to think modern boxing was so advanced that even Audley Harrison would spark Jack Dempsey with the first punch he threw....even if it was a jab!

Then I realised styles make fights, not time. Some of the really old timers? No. But the guys that look great on film? If anything it's today's fighters that pale in comparison for me.

I used to hate on Greb as well. 'Great, maybe but look at him, a Flyweight journeyman would have better punching technique that Greb wouldn't even know what he was seeing and would get battered'

Again, I was way off....probably ;-)

totally agree. i don't think we can make excuses for fighters that still look terrible on film and pretend their skills would evolve/compensate/adjust during the ring walk at mandalay bay. some fighters are great for their era and only their era

nor can we discount fighters who look great on film and would ALWAYS look great on film, no matter the era. Referencing the Robinson amateur footage thread, in 100 years they will still look at that man in awe

 

It's by no means exclusive, but things seemed to of picked up rapidly in the 1920s in general where skills and technique are concerned; obviously the '30s and '40s are very highly regarded. I've got to honestly say the McVey/Johnson film circa 1909 (?) was fairly startling.

Guys you really shouldn't feed the troll. All it takes is what 20 seconds to find footage of Tunney and Walker and Loughran, remember that Greb beat them and think he must be doing something right. If you can't do that you don't deserve the title boxing fan.

 

Greb would give every middleweight in todays boxing scene the brawl of their life. He'd beat a lot of them too.

Sergio Martinez, Paul Williams, Pavlik, Chavez Jr; They would all have to prepare for a Greb beating.

 

Rankings don't mean that much, we could go through times in history when the number 1 was average but not the best in the division

Against the best he faced Froch was shown up against Ward, lost to Kessler and would have lost to Taylor if Taylor had any survival instincts

 

Boxing is different, but it's more than 'modern training' it's the development of modern technique. Now Dempsey probably beats Audley (Audley is better than Willard though) but the Danny Williams of the Tyson fight knocks any version of Dempsey out cold

 

Philadelphia Jack O'Brien fought his last profesional fight in 1911.

This footage was shot inb 1925, when he had been retired for 14 years and Greb was the reigning middleweight champion.

You should probably research basic facts such as these, if you are going to draw your entire enterpretation of Greb's 300+ fight career from this segment of footage.

I hate to break it to you, but the Danny Williams of the Tyson fight wasn't on an altogether different level from Audley Harrison, and Willard would have beaten them both in the same night.
