    Over Dempsey?

EDIT: In other words, replace Tunney with a peaking Moore, for the two fights Tunney fought with Dempsey.

EDIT 2: In fact, i'll change the title.

Dempsey of the Sharkey fight versus say, Archie of the Marciano fight?

I say Moore walks Dempsey into some traps. If Dempsey can't find the killer low blow/k.o combo then Archie can land the better shots to win the decision IMO. But it'd be tough. Dempsey was tough and Moore could be caught and hurt more regularly at all his weights.

Moore was more skilled, greater but Dempsey had more raw power. I just think The Ol' Mongoose would be too cute at this stage, and Dempsey wasn't as savvy as The Rock.

Maybe they both hit the deck at some stage. An interesting one that I can't make a solid pick for. Too many variables.

Instead of former LHW champ Tunney getting old Dempsey, prime Archie Moore gets him. Two fights.

i don't wanna fall back on this but if sharkey could outbox dempsey, than surely moore could. he was a decent size heavy for the time but as you said, his durability may not be enough against a dempsey level puncher.

that being said, that version of dempsey likely wouldn't be able to pull the trigger against a peaking moore. too tricky, too smart. Dempsey physical advantages and animal ferocity had passed and he'd be solidly countered by moore

Moore beats the past prime 1926/27 Dempsey. By this point, the ageing Manassa Mauler would n't have the speed to deal with Archie.

I wouldn't expect it. Archie, particularly as a heavy, is just too stationary I think. Dempsey is still capable of exploding from time to time - the infamous long count, of course - and he'd almost certainly have an easier time getting to Moore than was the case with Tunney. I don't think he has the chin to survive Jack's rushes, which would only be occasionally successful, but that's all he'd really need. Maybe Moore puts Dempsey on the canvas before the end though.

Interesting fight, I'd go with Archie over a prime Dempsey, a far better technician and he could pick Dempsey apart easily, Dempsey always had nightmares with technicians. Dempsey doesn't hold a candle to Marciano

    Moore by KO.

He almost KOd Rocky who had one of the great chins. The pressure Marciano applied to Archie was awesome yet the Ol Mongoose stood in there for about 9 rounds.

Marciano never let up. Dempsey wouldnt be able to apply that kind of consistant pressure to Moore especially at that stage of his career. He may make rushes but Archie Moore was a great counterpuncher who could hit as well.

Going against the majority , I give Dempsey a chance of getting to Archie, Moore did not have Tunney's fleetness of foot, nor his chin.
Jack probably had not enough legs left at this stage to catch the Mongoose , but I think he matches up better than he did with The Quick-silver Marine.

Is it 10 rounds? I actually think confidently that Dempsey would win. I don't think this is a great style matchup for Moore. Dempsey gets their quickly, and assuming he can take a few of the punches from traps Moore will undoubtedly land, Dempsey should be in the clearing. His speed of pressure even at this stage of his career is too good. He should be able to maul and simply out-work Moore. Moore biggest issue with Marciano besides his power was his workrate. Dempsey has a good work-rate, and he can actually apply that activity quicker because he has a quicker pressure. Dempsey won't be nearly as damaging as Marciano, but I think he chips away at Moore to win a decision simply due to activity.

It's possible Moore wins enough rounds countering and setting traps, even flooring Dempsey. A 15 round fight should better suit Dempsey than Moore. A 10 round fight might be just a good enough duration for Moore to do enough with his skills intact to pace himself for Dempsey. Dempsey has much more trouble with mobile boxer-movers because he's too busy getting out-boxed while chasing, and doesn't get his chances to out-maul on the inside, nor does he have the engine to sustain work in the face of mobility. At least this is true at the stage of his career when he fought Tunney.

I actually think he could take Dempsey's punches. Marciano was just a lot more damaging and too non-stop with his punching. But I agree with the rest of your assessment. Moore is too stationary, and not going to out-fight Dempsey on the inside regardless of the stage Dempsey is in in his career.

The amount of rounds is certainly key. 10 rounds would favor Moore and 15 would favor Dempsey.

I agree with these two posts, & firmly believe Moore is superior H2H than anyone Dempsey beat.

Including Sharkey, who was very clearly beating Dempsey until he was brutalised by vicious lowblows.

Sharkey was beating Dempsey on the inside. He was out-mauling the mauler. Moore would not beat Dempsey on these terms...
