    As far as divisional title reign is concerned, yeah. Monzon fought nothing but Top 5 rated contenders throughout his run while Duran had a few nondescript title defenses. In a P4P sense, I still give him the nod as fighter of the decade for wins over Marcel, Palomino and Kobayashi in addition to a phenomenally dominant 135 title reign.

    They certainly added a few tricks to his reportoire though. But I agree, they were essentially honing someone who was already the most naturally talented fighting animal on the planet at that time. Duran was Duran. But his feinting got even better as he progressed IMO, and that suggests Brown's influence IMO. Pretty sure I read summat about it on here as well, by someone who knows more about it than me :D

    The more you get into boxing, the more you appreciate guys like Duran, Louis, Moore, etc. They're not as flashy as Jones Jr. and they did not retire unbeaten, but they knew how to fight.

    imo, everything you need to know about duran you can learn from 5 fights:

    buchanan 1 (ferocity and skill)
    dejesus 3 (techincally near flawless)
    leonard 1 (the night a man became a legend)
    hearns 1 (erasing any doubts about his courage)
    barkley (skill and will beat youth and power)

    The may sound pretentious but those fights show the progression and evolution of duran as a man and a boxer

    Nothing shows Durans capability head-to-head like Dejesus 2 in my book. Sure, he was wild and aggressive and reckless against a fantastic fighter. Dejesus actually fought better in the early goings. Didn't matter.

    Too much chin, too much aggression, too much of a relentless menace. He just has so much energy at the weight. Hits like a freight train.

    Live in that ring with him, and you know what you been through. Almost impossible to beat on his best night at lightweight.
