But Grant and Brewer were end-of-career losses, just like the poster who mentioned Ray Robinson's losses. Those were not peak fights. I think the posts mentioning Jack Sharkey and Joey Giardello sum up this subject perfectly. i would also add in Fritzie Zivic, Armando Muniz and Maurice Harris.

I think the gruelling fight with vulnerable but brutal straight puncher Chung-il Choi took a lot out of him.Softened up enough for Limon to make that comeback and then he fell rapidly out of contention afterward.

 

Paulie malignaggi - may have more to do with his opposition, however he stood up to Cotto and looked pretty damn good in a losing effort. Then we have the fights against the likes of Khan and Hatton, where he took the first round and got his **** pushed in for the rest of the night.

Jimmy Young - arguable wins over norton and Ali, a draw with Shavers after being blown out by shavers in 3 a year earlier. A long up with 2 over Lyle and one over Foreman he appears to have a nice little resume, however when you look at the rest of the record and there are plenty of loses to real mediocre fighters.

 

That's true, I was just trying to think of a more interesting pick than your standard answers. I think it adds more to the thread.

His performances were usually strong when taken individually. But if you look at his career as a whole, it varies. He was on top of the world when he fought Jones. When he was losing to Thadzi and Griffin in the 90's and fighting tomato cans, did you really think he would rise back to near the top of the sport as he did?

I'm usually the last one to use Boxrec figures in a thread, but in that ten year span he fought 17 times. His opponents had a combined 97 losses, so that contributes to his success.

 

The Thadzi and Griffin fights were controversial.....the Thadzi fight was a robbery. but Toney IS hot and cold, it all depends on what shape he's in. Look at the body of Toney in the Barkley fight compared with the Roy Jones fight

 

Toney was written off for the better part of a decade and pretty irrrelevant, not to mention hardly ever in top shape.He's a good enough pick i'd say.His post-Jones to cruiserweight revival period was as bad as Nunn's career after the loss to James.

 

I honestly haven't watched a lot of Toney. Guess you could say i'm saving his career for a rainy day, like you would a good book haha.
