Does "Money" Mayweather Really Cost Himself More Money?

I know much has been said about the counterintuitive success of Floyd's "love to hate him" type of celebrity discourse; how Floyd somehow "only playing" an obnoxious sports supervillain encourages more PPV's buys from the non-boxing public as they watch in the hopes that the arrogant young fighter gets knocked out. It's made him more money than he ever could have being another boring all-american black athlete with a dopey smile, a stutter & no rags to riches story to rally behind.

Or has it? Mayweather has diversified into the avenues of entertainment, mobile gaming investments & boxing promotion, but is he missing out on the classic revenue stream of modern athletes - Brand promotions?

Sure, Floyd has done some promotions for Reebook & AT & T, but those paydays were a decidedly meager 275k compared to the 30, 40, 50, & 60 million dollar contracts that other athletes at the top of their respective sports garner.

As we sit on the verge of seeing Manny's lucrative Nike endorsement cave based on one of his goofyass religious comments, is Floyd's supposed "fake bad boy" image actually costing him endorsement deals worth more than extra PPV buys?

I think the hate factor toward Floyd cost him more money than it earned him
Of course being the bad guy makes people react and captures their attention, some might even pay a ppv to see him lose
However, you made a good point by pointing out that he does not have big endorsement contracts, whereas he easily could

Interesting question. Clearly, his role as the villain has made him a must-watch commodity for many boxing/sports fans, but you may be right in the sense that the potential sponsorship deals he loses would be more lucrative in the long-term.

If he was sponsored, he couldn't do or say what he wanted.

Example: All the sponsors would have dropped him for saying what he said about Jeremey Lin, or making the infamous "Poochiao" video, not to mention his impending jail sentence.

Sponsorship ain't everything. And once you're out of the sponsors "favor", what then?

Fact: He's one of the highest paid athletes without the crutch of sponsorships. So he must not give a **** how it affects his bottom line, and neither should you.

He possibly could gain more if he was corporate man, but he surely would lose some fans too. People like Floyd because he speaks up and doesn't blindly obey the status quo

Floyd is a really cool boxer, but I never understand why some of his fans are so impressed with the way he "speaks up". Since when did Floyd speak up on anything save his view on asians?

He's responsible for who he fights. Have you noticed how his fans always dog other fighters for depends on my promoter or talk to my promoter. Even non-Floyd fans don't respect that mentality.

Sugar Ray Robinson wasn't very political either nor did he give a **** about social justice, but he was his own boss and respected for this.

They revolutionized how fighters can handle things. If people can't see this, then they can't see it.

I can't remember what show he said it on, but recently Floyd said he fields offers for him to sponsor brands, but the money usually isn't good enough in his eyes.
