As I remember, I had it even going into the last round which Pea gave away, handing Oscar a razor-thin victory. Oscar landed some nice, hard shots and was the clear aggressor while Whitaker, at times, embarrassed him with his defence. Very close fight where Pea showed glimpses of his former greatness.
Yeah your right ..Didn't think about the draw ...It was such a tactical fight ..How much of Pernell's age showed in that fight ?
Whitaker showed incredible reflexes... He showed incredible speed, and a great chin. Oscar showed great speed, and showed to be more powerful and relentless. Whitaker was hesitant to open up because Oscar was a huge puncher.
I really liked Oscar's movement in that fight ..The in and out ..He really was catching Pernell with some good shots ..Was surprised that he actually frustrated him ,thought it be the other way around ..
Didn't his eye start swelling after just one shot ? I thought that was the reason why Pernell was so passive.
How does prime Floyd do against that version of Oscar? Personally I think Floyd wins a close decision.
Great thread! I was just talking about this tilt the other night! Sweet Pea was certainly not shot by any means, but I don't think he was quite as fast and elusive as he had been. Nonetheless he made Oscar miss repeatedly.
Personally he makes any fighter in the history of the sprot miss him at his best ..Wan't this dubbed best P4P at the time ??
Oscar at 147 is sheer size for he was a huge WW but he had a few distinctive problems of fading down the stretch prolly due to making weight and he was not as smart defensive or offensive. He would gladly trade as he did with Mosley and just swing wildly at times. Oscar late in WW/154 had more power and more developed right hand and better gas tank and also size but he is also older. To me I think Floyd would beat Oscar in any weight. Floyd was just a phenomenal boxer at any weight and adapted accordingly to box with his weight. Oscar was 33, was he at his physical peak? i doubt it but he is over the hill? Most definitely not. Experience trade from physical peak. Also in further his out of prime he had all the advantages to him being 160+ small ring and big glove which all going to cause problems for floyd being that he has never fought at 154, heavy gloves to slow and tire him out and small ring to take away his legs but Oscar still clearly lost 8-4. 9-3 if you give swing round to Floyd. Only weight I give Oscar a solid chance of beating Floyd was at 154. Anything below without advantage, Floyd will be too fast and skill and win even wider.
De La Hoya won. . . I know people try to sound like they're "in the know" by saying Whitaker was robbed. . . But he wasn't. . . Oscar won the fight. . It was close, but DLH won 7 rounds. . . He landed more power punches, and controlled the tempo of the fight.
Floyd fought distinictly different above 140. His last resembling fight where he moved around like PBF was against Baldomir. I think At 135-140 Floyd will throughly embrass Oscar in a full size ring where he can maximize his legs. he used to fly all over the ring with leaping left hooks, throwing combos, and lead rights. PBF was a pure boxer/puncher and even more untouchable than now. Money is a calculating counter puncher with more developed defense where he smothers too. PBF > Money big time IMO.
Whittaker COULD have won had he thrown more punches, but Oscar won imo and I dont see the contaversy.
Oscar was pretty fleet footed, was huge, and had an amazing jab. If Burton and ****ing Castillo could bug Floyd with their jabs Oscar's jab would **** him badly.
Oscar still had a jab when he fought floyd at 154 but did he win? castillo I floyd was injured. Burton was awkward. I think He caught Floyd by surprise tbh. Oscar may can get success with his jab but Floyd will have success doing what he wants too. Oscar will have a lot more to worry about than Vice versa imo. FLoyd is not going to lose just bc of a jab. Floyd will do what he usually does and adapt. Plus he is not bad at shooting his rights over jabs too which usually discourages fighters from abusing the jab. Floyd can hit Oscar with basically anything while Oscar really have one punch that finds success on floyd. Now factor that with Floyd's speed at 135-140 will pull the fight much further from Oscar.
