No his upbringing was very working class.

His father loaded and unloaded cargo at New York harbor and Tunney dropped out of school at 15 and god a job in a mail room for an office but worked his way up to be promoted twice.

I dont remember what he earned but i remember reading he was promoted twice making his wage $11 per week then $17 per week which was well above the average wage which was about $400 a year in 1910 in the US.

From the slums of NY. He was dirt poor, and should not have even been mention imo.

The first and only fighter from the upper class is bare kuck John Johnson. But that is about it.

    Where does this come from?

9 people in a one bedroom apartment does not really equal upper class.

I believe Ali was middle class and didn't really have a tough life growing up.

Understand Marco Antonio Barrera's from a wealthy Mexico City family that rents film production equipment and stages.

I thought Salvador Sanchez was the son of a millionaire (no peso jokes please), but that's from memory.

Wasn't "Orchid Man" Georges Carpentier a dandy from a well-to-do, high society family in France?
