In Doc Kearn's memoirs (not the best source I know) its described in there that Walker was beat by Greb who kept thumbing him, and who had 7 pounds on him AND who had the adavantage of the ref who was leaning on Walker after the 7th round from an injured knee (after a bad fall) He then claims that greb and walker have a street fight later that night. this has commonly been dispelled as a myth... but apparently, Doc tried to get the rematch: "There was a great demand for a rematch, especially after word of their street fight swept the city [a myth] and I was all for putting them together again in the ring. "Let's get somebody else, Doc," Mickey pleaded. "He's too good a friend of mine for me to bust up." I asked Greb what he thought. "You can keep that Irish bum," Greb answered, grinning. "There must be easier ways for me to make money than fighting him." it doesn't seem in Greb's nature to be unwilling to fight Walker again and considering the source its probably made up. But does anyone know of any details of a second fight, or that any parties were unwilling to take part in a second bout?
I have NEVER read of any serious plans for a rematch..Greb, though past his best beat Walker so decisevly that Walker was on the verge of being stopped in the 15th round...Within about 1 year harry greb would be dead from a botched operation in 1926...Jack Kearns was a snake oil salesman so I wouldn't take his words seriously. After all 20 years later Kearns who then managed Joey Maxim called Maxim a better fighter than Jack Dempsey. Kearns was a carnival barker, looking to make a buck. In short a b.s. artist.
hey burt, not sure if you read the other thread where we discussed it but what are your thoughts on the existence of the greb-walker fight in the jacobs/espn catalogue?
I know Cayton is quoted as saying " I would trade anything in my collection for any fight of Greb that exists "
Jim Jacobs " If somebody - somebody astute about films, not just a guy who knows nothing about collecting - found, say, Greb footage in his cellar or attic, and he called me for a deal, I would trade him anything I have in my collection for whatever he has on Harry Greb " Sorry this was the quote I was thinking of, and it was Jacobs not Cayton, just rechecked a book I have.
I'm always hopefull that a copy was transferred, and is around somewhere waiting to be found, the sparring footage wasn't found until, 1991 in The University Of Carolina during a renovation in a news reel entitled " The Greb Training Footage " so one can only hope
I cannot believe a film still exists of the Greb/Walker fight in 1925...Of course there is the REMOTE possibility that a clip exists unknown to anybody...Years ago someone discovered by CHANCE a training film of Greb getting ready for his bout with the Toy Bulldog in 1925...The film was found by happenstance in a college archives by a collecter who was nice enough to make me a copy...I value this clip very much which shows Greb "sparring" with the 55 year old Phil Jack O'Brien, on the roof of O'Brien's gym on Bwy, NYC... Greb looks so uneasey before a camera, except for his big smile after he's towled off by his girl friend...One year later Greb would be dead...Seeing Greb in a filmed fight now would be like finding the Holy Grail of Boxing...
