I cant deny that I would want to watch that match up if it were made and would be slightly rooting for Kessler, I think it would be a fight where Kessler fights his heart out but gets outworked and battered about a bit from what I have seen lately. No Clev isnt a big hitter but I think he would hit Kessler often
Ok, fair enough. Yes, when Kessler met Calzaghe he had never lost a single round on all judges scorecards. Not one. And he had arguably only lost 3 rounds (close ones and all to Mundine in Sydney). And that version we have not seen for several fights now. But I will be positive and say that Kessler is now back. I am not so confident about this because it took him a round or two to get things going, but te good thing is that his eyes looked to have really healed. He seemed more precise again and as if he could judge distance more like before. If he can add some routine and tactical skills to his earlier smooth skills.. then things look good. The punch he KOed Green with was not a fluke. It was planned and he shook Green with the same punch in round 2 and 3. So it was only a matter of time before the light would really go out. This is a good sign - because why was neither Ward, Johnson (who got a very early and questionable stoppage win) etc able to see this opening in Green's game? Why was this the first time in Green's career that anyone had cleanly seen and been able to take advantage of this flaw that Kessler shook Green with repeatedly? That is impressive and good homework from the Kessler camp - and of course the execution from Kessler.
I think it was more the ring rust that hurt kessler in the opening round, dont forget this is the first time he has fought in 11 months! he just seemed flat footed and slow but after the first round he seemed to wake up and he came back with one hell of an answer No doubt this isnt the same Kessler we saw years ago against Calzaghe but he is still good enough to beat a lot of fighters out there, he may even be able to stick it to Chad Dawson (lets not forget what a crude fighter like Pascal was able to do) Kessler could very well be a force at light heavy, he proved he has the power to do so. Well done to Kessler shutting Green up in style
Kessler usually fought more fluidly. Just backbone boxing. Very smotth and well-oiled. Then he had all sorts of injuries and had to fight a very crude fight half-blind agaisnt Froch. Now it looks like his eye-sight is back and he is fighting much more tactically. The final punch was set up through-out the fight with little punches to Green's right glove repeatedly and so on. This style demands much more thinking on the spot and not only sheer natural trained and engrained ability. Thus it might not seem as fluid. But I still chose to be positive about Kessler. I think this was beautifully planned and executed. Something that noone else has been able to do to Green.
C'mon, Green has been a corpse since Johnson KO'd him. Even Lemieux had him nearly going on two separate occasions. Rust is certainly a factor for Kessler, but he doesn't seem to be able to anticipate punches like he used to. I suspect double vision.
That said.......Kessler looked in better shape tonight than he did in the Ward fight and showed more resilience vs a much bigger puncher. At least his punches were landing cleanly as his vision problem seems to be fixed and while Green dont have a chin, it may also be that Mikkel's hand problems are in check for now. A win over Kessler today is just as good as a win over Kessler in 09-yesterday.
When Kessler started taking risks, and father time, he went from world class to something just below. Still a good fighter though. So yes, you are correct.
i actually had to boxrec this. green lost two of his last four and kessler is fighting for the first time as a lhw and its for the wbc silver lhw belt. unbelieveable.
Theres no doubt that Kessler is way out of his prime. But this is a new version with the left hook. If he learned this left hook in his prime it could have caused Calzaghe problems. But he learned it to late... But still, its better than this 1-2 robot kinda style, that are easy to read and counter. I think this version of Kessler could do better against Froch than the Kessler in Super6.
