TV RINGSIDE. can aussie promotors and managers put it together for the good of boxing in oz? we know boxing needs the exposure. there have never been so many channells on tv to choose from surely one of the chanells whould pick up a weekly card. if all the managers, promotors etc would work together for a common cause (get boxing back its interest) surely its achieveable? not only that, it would give out heavies some exposure, and may even entice them to fight eachother. money begets money. the show would gain a following in the ratings pretty quickly. more people watching, more money would flow into the show, and to the boxers. it is possible. why not do it?
whatever the reasons, sit down with tv executives and sort out some guidelines. we cant put on shows with gangs of neanderthals entering the ring. it should be done like all other tv sports. security everywhere, bag checks, cost for entry, no dickheads allowed in etc. there would be a model to work to. the yanks do ok, so do the europeans. surely one of their models could work?
No dickheads allowed into a boxing show?? The place would be near empty if this rule was brought into effect mate
ONEHD televised it while it suited them and then pulled the pin because it suited them. Just like they would with any other program. Strange thing is it was rumored to be rating okay. Which is usually the most important thing, and often the only thing that matters to them.
The problem is in boxing everyone is in it for themselves no one wants to work together for the good of the game. A lot of people are in it to inflate there own egos. Your right though it is what boxing needs even a fortnightly show on free to air. Maybe if a real promoter got involved the poor fighter wouldn't have to sell tickets to get on.
It probably doesnt help the cause of getting Boxing on mainstream TV when one of the main drivers behind getting it back on free to air TV on ONEHD in 2009 was Adam Watt and not much longer after the deal was done he was charged with trying to import $50 million of pseudoephedrine. It doesnt look good for the station to be in cohorts with a convicted drug imported. And the Billy Dib fiasco certainly didnt help either.
Could be done, but they can never compete with USA or Europe and if oz fighter got a big name, he will Ppv quick smart to make money.
The bits I've highlighted contradict each other, so you would certainly think it didn't suit them. I also heard the ratings were good. Someone here (Kagsy, I think) said it was primarily to do with the Dib fiasco.
It was ONEHD's contradiction I was drawing attention to in the post :good Ratings are usually the bottom line. It sounded like they were getting the ratings. But they none the less still pulled the show.
Great idea, something needs to be done to showcase Australian Boxing it's dying a slow death at the moment.!!!!
