Woah! Chavez gets no credit for earning a 'draw' with Sweet Pea.

I do think his second win over Rog' is terribly underrated though.

 

Now if I can just get him (hhascup) to put out the same info regarding Henry Armstrong. That guy has an absurd amount of information, memorabilia, old magazines, etc. at his disposal.

 

I think Julio was absolutely outstanding, and I too have noticed something of a trend lately that devalues his achievements, or attempts to. I agree with everything you wrote, bar giving him credit for the Whitaker fight. :good

But it's hard to say who is overrated and underrated...it's a matter of individual interpretation I think.

 

A scary thought occurred to me thinking about Tommy the other day...but for the splintering of world titles and proliferation of junior divisions, he may never have actually won a world title. He may have gone down as an oustanding contender, but nothing more.

At welter...depends if he or Leonard got to the champ first. (Whomever he may have been.) If it's Leonard, then Tommy loses in a gallant effort. If it's someone else, possibly Duran now that I think about it, then Tommy has a much better chance. But still, it's not a given. Leonard was always going to be a big factor at welter.

Does he stick at welter (where he was already having weight issues) or move up to middleweight? If he moves up, Hagler blasts him back down.

Then does he move all the way up to light heavy, without the benefit of getting used to carrying the extra weight gradually, or stick around at middle only to get blasted out by Hagler again?

Quite interesting, if you ask me. Shows you the obstacles the old-timers had to deal with, and how winning world titles has become so much easier over the years.

I reckon Chavez is under-rated these days becaiuse he won 'only' 4 titles. In truth he cut people in half. A monster of the ring

Fists of fury good post, but Marshall, Burley, Holman Wiliams etc etc are ranked highly, spanning similar weights and without a title between them.

Essentially I still think he'd be very highly regarded nonetheless.

 

Really, the only credit I give him for the fight with Pea was simply pointing out how good he was even after a long career and moving up that much in weight. I think the fight showed he was on the downside of his career by then, but at his peak, he's easily an ATG. I don't think Whitaker hangs with him in Julio's prime.
It's been years since I saw that fight, and usually I prefer to watch fighters in their prime (after all, I'm a fight fan more than a historian), but I think I'm going to look at it again this weekend.

 

I think Pea was clearly sharper lower in weight as well. I say he schools a prime Chavez just as bad.
