in my opinion what hurts todays boxers is that they now care to much about the money. Mayweather and Pacquiao have the skills required to become top ATG's but they havent even faced each other to be up there. It is true that most sports have improved vastly but to me whats different about boxing is that it is a physical and mental sport. Also i think even though it has some truth to it it is a lie that old boxers will always be above modern ones. look at Duran and SRL they arent that old and Duran is top 10 in every ATG list and SRL is top 15 or top 10 the difference between them and Mayweather and Pacquiao is that they fought everyone at every weight class they went up too

While I agree that the old-timer's do get overrated sometimes, by contrast a lot of modern fans think they're overrated out of pure ignorance. The sheep mentality thing swings both ways.

Put simply, unless you've been following the sport for a very long time, you have no business drawing up any sort of list. Especially P4P lists. You're not qualified.

To suggest that modern fighters are greater than old-timers based on the fact that they are bigger, stronger and faster (So they say) is looking at things from completely the wrong angle.

By that definition, fighters (All fighters) ten or twenty years from now will be 'greater' than all the fighters throughout the history of the sport, including today's crop. They will be stronger, faster and fitter, due to more modern training and diets.

It's an idiotic stance to say the least.

Zivic's record is astonishing. Armstrong may not even be the best fighter on it. I think you can count the number of fighter's with his type of record on one hand.

He fought almost everyone his generation produced, he ducked nobody, not on the grounds of colour, not on the grounds of excellence. If you want to learn a bit more you cold read this:

Mayweather is my favorite current boxer but you cant even put him and langford in the same sentence, Langford a guy who went from lightweight to koing one of the best heavyweights and doing it while partially blind

I for one, and many other too, think a hell of a lot of Mayweather. He is an exceptional talent, and at least at 130 maybe 135 one of the best of all time.
In terms of pure skill, he gives way to very few.

But here we have a little issue...Pacquiao. Still haven't fought. I'm not laying blame at anyone's doorstep, but they haven't fought. How can anyone call themselves an ATG without fighting the most obvious threat out there? He is an ATG, don't get me wrong, but he could do even more to cement that status. Same for Pacquiao.

60, 70 years ago this **** would never have happened. They would have fought at least once, maybe two, three, four times...depending on how competitive the fights were.

Then some new boxing fan comes along, checks Boxrec and sees (For example) that Mayweather or Pacquiao lost three or four times to the same guy, and dismisses him as a bum.

you can make comparisons, like willie pepps defence vs pernells or floyds defence. while all 3 had amazing defensive ability, you have to insert athletism & reflex.

because along with technic you have to be fast and speed mostly comes from being athletic (often, I saw a fat heavyweight not long ago with superb handspeed, forgot his name, but dude was shuby but very fast )
and reflexes, well that one is god given, combined with training focused on getting out quick of danger zone.

comclusion. most athletic of the 3 is floyd. best reflexes also floyd and well as far as technic I favor both over pepp, pernell and floyd are equal. overall defence winner floyd.

this game you could make for offence. footwork etc.

down the line I think it would play out between prime srr & prime rjj who the best (not the nessesserly the greatest) was. one was maybe the most complete boxer ever, the other, the fastest and most athletic ever. both were big puncher. roy was one too, he just was holding back a lot, but his power was huge.
