i think his thought was to get something (foot/leg/hip) underneath the ball but he had no idea where it was. youll see in the replay hes not even looking at where the ball would be.

getting something underneath it is not playing at the ball. playing at the ball is a deliberate attack on the ball itself in an attempt to dislodge or gain posession of it

 

Farrahs toe poked the ball out of Inglis' hands. Farrah by his posture was clearly playing at the ball. Its a defined as a kick. You cannot slide your foot under an opponent now so what he did as illegal.
