So basically I've promised by mate who is a keen and talented sprinter that I'll walk down with him to a sprinting track nearby and do some sprints with him. I'm there more to keep him company and help him for his sprinting but if it will help for boxing(muscle fibres, footwork or anything like that?) then that's a bonus.
sprinting is very very helpful for boxing. its a strength excercise, it builds power in legs and other parts of body. it also helps to handle fast pace situations in boxing (when heart rate is very high, in trading punches etc..).
I can't imagine this would be true but I was thinking more along the lines of the first thing you posted.
He means it helps in recovery after strenuous output by doing sprints. It helps your body process oxygen intake more efficiently that leads to faster recovery and less fatigue.
Going back to the bareknuckle days, fighters have used sprints in their training. They used it to "sharpen the wind." Will sprints make you a better fighter in other ways- a better combination puncher, a better defensive fighter, or smarter in the ring? No.
Sprinting will increase strength, thus having stronger legs resulting in a more solid base. Yes, do it.
Keeps a solid base, without a solid base you aint gonna do ****. It wont directly make u a better combination puncher. So yes, it does make you a better boxer.
I think its an underrated power builder, and well recognised conditioner, both anaerobic and aerobic, if you consider a fast run of 1000m or less a sprint, which I do. Anything under 5 minutes of hard work is cracking.
Thanks MrSmall, I always value your advice in paricular :good Sounds good, I'm looking forward to it now.
Of course it will man .Read this article it's a quality one .Don't get sprints mixed up with intervals though an interval is anything over a minute roughly I think sprint under . You could do 200 or 400 metre intervals or say 10 x 100 metre sprints 30 secs to 1 min rest .Still good anerobic . http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/ss11.htm
You ever heard of tabata intervals as well .It can be used as an alternative roadwork session I read on Rosstraining and if you work hard enough 4 mins can be intense enough . 20 secs sprint 10 secs rest for 4 mins You can use sledgehammer swings , heavy bag punch outs , sprints running , jumprope or even a bodyweight sxercise push-ups burpees etc http://boxing.isport.com/boxing-guides/tabata-training-conditioning-for-boxers
yeah mate I do tabata bag drills all the time, just never thought about sprints mainly because i'm indoors
