My pick is going with Juan Manuel Marquez....Alexis is the harder puncher, better and attacker and good counterpuncher, Marquez is a good attacker and a great counterpuncher.....IMO the fight should held at 130, both were seasoned and filled out...would be a close fight but Marquez's combinations and counters will score more than Arguello's harder shots....Marquez has a great chin, Arguello's is good so considering the chin to power discrepency both could go down, I just see Marquez winning because of the cleaner shots, in Marquez prime his defense was very good
JMM is my favorite active fighter but Arguello is Arguello. At 130, Arguello's height, reach, Power and comparable boxing technique would be the deciding factors. There's a reason Arguello is a Legend at JLW.
indeed....both are legends...i think 130 was Arguello's best weight.....Marquez showed the same effeciveness he had at 126 there, only lost a razor thin fight to Manny...it would have been a quite entertaining fight
Over 12 I would pick Marquez. He might have just! enough to keep Arguello at bay. Over 15 I would pick Arguello though. One of Arguellos greatest strengths was his consistency imo. He was very consistent with his attacks. He would get stronger as the fight wore on. Arguello had a great chin to take any necessary punishment on the way in. He could punch like a mule, particularly with the right hand, and he had a vicious uppercut to the belly when he got on the inside. Arguello tended to have problems with mover stroke Boxers imo.....Fernandez being the most notable. However I dont think Marquez moves all that much, and I'm actually not sold on his chin either. I think Arguello could catch up to him and knock him out, and I think the lack of movement would aid that process, but I think Arguello would probably need to get it done over 15 rather 12, as that would probably favour Marquez. I believe Arguello would of knocked Vilomar Ferrnandez out over 15 rounds, as he was coming on strong toward the end of their fight, only it was scheduled for 10 rounds. Arguello had a war wit Ruben Olivares but still managed to knock out him down the stretch of the fight, and what round was it he knocked Mancini out in, 13th or 14?
Two of Marquez's biggest flaws imo...............(1) He gets involved too much. If he would of stopped mixing it with Manny he most probably would of won the rematch. (2) He doesn't move enough. Marquez is a terrific counter puncher. He's one of the best at countering in COMBINATION, but at times he stays their too long, which just makes him susceptible to catching the receipt imo.
I love this post and agree completely.JMM may have had quicker hands, but that's the only advantage he has.
If it was a 12 rounder, then I would think Arguello would just get to work a little faster..15 suits him better but I don't think over 12 will change the result to much...Marquez will be in it till the bitter end though, he won't go away easily and he as skilled or more skilled then several fighters that gave Alexis some early trouble. Arguello's right to the body is going to play a big role in this...and it will have devastating effect down the stretch.
I'm all Arguello on this based on what he has accomplished and being a literal monster at 130. However, what we mainly hear is that Arguello has trouble with guys who moved, and Marquez moved very well. How does it factor in this fight?
Arguello pin point accuracy and a straight right induced knockdown would built him a comfortable lead,Marquez would start to adjust to Alexis style and would start winning some rounds but its not enough and he ends up losing a close but clear decision in favor of Arguello.
I'm just going out here,so I'll have a pop at this later because I've just read the Arguello bio and he's fresh in my thoughts. But I'd like to see what Divac has to say about this one.
Mancini didn't outbox Arguello. He applied some nice aggression at times and had success in spots, but was clearly losing, certainly more so than 2 of the judges had it. Mancini and Marquez don't fight much alike, and Arguello peaked at 130 anyway, not 135. Marquez would make a good fight out of it but he probably loses.
