atsch Tell that to all the boys and girls in S.E.Asia and Japan, who don't give in your words This content is protected about American fighters or the whole western fight scene.
The Brits and Germans. Those poor folks will buy into anything the promoters and press pass as the next best thing.
We do hype our fighters up, so what ? We're a relatievly small nation with a pretty good record in boxing over the years. And crucially if they lose we carry on supporting them.
atschatsch I'll let you pass that message on for me thanks! Do Westerners give a rats ass about the Eastern fight scene? Not really, and theres many boxers in S.E. Asia and Japan who wouldnt be heard of globally if it wasnt for them fighting in the States! Im not saying that you have to fight in America to be good (you dont even have to be good to fight in America - if the hype is done right - thats what we're talking about here right?! ) but you do have to fight in America to be properly recognised. Thats where the money is, thats where the best tv coverage is for global transmission and thats where boxers become famous - Fact!
Sorry mate, Asian fighters are properly recognised in Asia, get better coverage (national exposure) and are superstars in their native lands all without US exposure. I didn't realise to be a proper recognised boxer you needed America's stamp of approval. Most American networks and fight fans don't give a **** what happens below 140.
They may well do in Asia I agree and Im sure the viewing numbers are high. But on a global scale they just dont have half the coverage, exposure or popularity that boxers who fight in US do. Ask an Asian if hes heard of Pacquiao or maybe even Mayweather and they would possibly say yes. Ask an American/European/Whatever who the top boxer/fighter is in Asia and very few could answer you. Im not saying that America has to give its stamp of approval at all but history has shown us that all the big fights have been staged in the States and the most successful boxers have had their biggest bouts there. Also we're talking about boxing here not the fight scene as a whole and correct me if Im wrong (Im sure ya will ) but arent the likes of kickboxing and other martial arts far more popular and receive more coverage than boxing?......like you said yourself the western fight scene is of no interest over there and boxing is predominantly a western sport! I agree about the American networks etc not really bothering about the lower weight divisions and thats kinda sad cos the lil guys usually have great tear ups but you kinda argued your own point - Most American networks or fight fans dont care about the divisions below 140 and so they get little coverage - so if you cant make America sit up and take note (regardless of your weight) you are not going to be as popular or get as much coverage.
Fair enough, I agree to be an true boxing ATM & ATG, to stand a chance of getting in the IBHOF and the big boxing publictions you need the States no question about it. Everyone knows Pac cos he's Asian and is an advertising magnet in Asia, however, Floyd, B'HOP, Ward The K bros, most people will have no idea especially in S.E.Asia. Interms of other fighting styles boxing isn't predominatley a western sport it has arguably just the same level of particiaption as in say the US or the UK where it's not a massive participation sport, possiby more partcipation in a country like Thailand that has a stong amatuer team and alot of crossover from their army of Muay Thai fighters. True, in Thailand and Japan Muay Thai MMA and kickboxing probably get more coverage just cos there is more of it. However in Indonesia, the the Philippines, Singapore and Korea I'd say you probabaly get more boxing on. MMA is big in Japan and growing in China where boxing and kickboxing/MT are also growing, but truth is the main TV market for MMA is the west. Thai's arguable the biggest fight nation in Asia don't watch MMA only MT and western boxing which shows live PPV bouts from the States on free on national TV early on Sunday mornings. People in the west forget that western boxing has a serious pedigree in Asia and is well followed in Japan, Korea, Thailand and the Philippines. What I meant by them not being interested in the western fight scene I meant, the westerns boxing scene as they very rarely get invitied to the party so just get on with their thing. The biggest threat to all the fight games on TV is football/soccer.
Very interesting and I wouldnt argue with any of your points there mate and how refreshing to have a debate on here with intelligent responses and not have it degrade into name calling etc Ive not been on the ESB forums for long but been a visitor to the site for about 5 years and many of the threads Ive seen since joining seem to collapse into chaos just cos someone cant handle being wrong, trolls or whatever So Thank You
