We know that NOW, but at the time, Lacy was considered a monster. In fact, it might be that Calzaghe ruined Lacy as a fighter.....did Froch ruin Bute? We don't know that yet. Bute will have to prove that he can come back from this defeat.

Lacy was only considered a monster to the fools who thought he was the 2nd coming of Tyson ..The man was outboxed by Omar Sheika prior to his fight with Joe .. Bute was to be the 2nd coming of Joe ,a fluffy undefeated record ,ranked higher and was suppose to be the man to beat at super middle ! Froch 's win was more impressive and lets not forget who he fought prior !

Froch's beat down over Bute. That was just a classic vintage type of beat down. He straight walked through him and Bute had no answer.

Who did Bute beat as good as world rated Reid that Lacy blasted out?

Surprised nobody has mentioned Frochs jab, footwork, and tactics. He was outboxing Bute prior to the bludgeoning,he only started to sit back on his punches after seeing the effect his power shots had on Bute.

Reid was years and years past his prime by the time he fought Lacy. That was a shadow of the Robin Reid who'd gone life and death in a split decision with Joe Calzaghe.

The Sakio Bika of 2007 that Bute beat widely in an IBF title eliminator was a far tougher proposition than the old declined Reid that Lacy defeated. Prime Reid would probably have beaten prime Bika, but Lacy did not beat prime Reid.

Tough one. I think at the time of the fight possibly Calzaghe's. When Joe fought Lacy I though Lacy was going to stop him. Lacy was the real deal in people's eyes and seemed to have no weaknesses. Then Calzaghe just destroyed him. At the time it was huge, but with Lacy going on to do nothing after that it lost its glamour, people claimed Lacy had never been that good after all. But I personally believe Calzaghe ended Jeff Lacy's career that night.
Before the Froch vs Bute fight, I was 51/49 in favour of Froch. I believed he was going to shock everyone, and going into the fight willing to take Bute's shots in order to test his chin. I also believed that if Froch could land his heavy hands on Bute he would hurt him, and I was right.

For these reasons I believe the Calzaghe win was slightly better. Before the fight I thought Lacy was a beast, with no weakness in his game. Whereas with Bute I could see he was beatable.

Reid, was past his best, but hadnt long before looked unlucky against Ottke who is considered one of the best SMWs and had beaten undefeated Magee knocking him down 4 times for a clear win. Magee is now WBA int champ and was only a point behind of Froch on 2 cards going into round 11.
Bute hasnt beaten anyone as good as that. Magee was considered one of Butes better wins and Lacy beat the fighter who beat that fighter in a more definative way than anyone else had ever done.

By idiots and by a way too excitable US media, yes.

By anyone who'd actually watched his fights and saw that he was over-reliant on a clubbing left hand and had a poor skillset, no.

I suggest you track down Jeff Lacy vs Omar Sheika rather than go around bleating about how Lacy was a 'monster'. He was closer to being a mediocrity than he was a monster.

Froch's win over Bute is better, without a doubt.

Both Calzaghe and Froch were big underdogs coming in and they both had the fight at home. Bute and Lacy were both undefeated but Bute had fought a higher standard of opposition. Johnson, Andrade and Bika were better than Lacy's best win which was a well past his best Robin Reid, and Bute had been a world level fighter for much longer than Lacy. Lacy had only been at world level for less than 2 years whereas Bute had had 10 (?) world title fights and won most of them by stoppage. He'd barely lost a round in his career.

Bika '07 would've beat down Reid '05. Reid has a better resume and was a better fighter in his prime, but the version of Bika that Bute fought (prime Bika) would've battered the old declined Reid that Lacy fought (way past-prime Reid).

OK, this is where I bail out of this thread. I don't deal well when confronted with utter insanity...
