Truly underappreciated fighter imo. Should easily be a first ballot HOFer. Wish he would have been around for it. So many memorable moments...RIP

Since he has passed can he be inducted into the hall of fame straight away as oppossed to waiting 5 years?

Seriously this guy deserves it for even making it to the ring given his upbringing and life outside the ring.

My fav moment of tapia was after his loss to barrera (who he is a close friend of). As the scores were being red out he stayed in barreras corner , arms around eachother smiling having a laugh with both barrera and his team, then barrera takes a sip of water and offers it to tapia who gladly accepts. Not sure why but this made me admire both men so much

For a guy whos life fell on such heartache he was such a genuinely nice guy

    RIP CHAMP

They were good friends i remember Tapia jumping into the ring right before the Hamed-Barrera fight to hug Barrera and wish him good luck.

Im sure it was after the Romero fight when he said to him afterwards "You'll always be my champion." A touch of class after a fight that was so highly charged it couldnt be held in Alberquerque. God bless you Johnny RIP

My introduction to Johnny T was his fight after being released from prison. It was no regular network TV, I will never forget being totally amazed at how good this guy was. No matter what happened in the ring or outside of the ring I was a fan. One of the greatest fighters ever.

"My name is Johnny Lee Tapia. I was born on Friday the 13th. A Friday in February of 1967. To this day I don't know if that makes me lucky or unlucky. When I was eight I saw my mother murdered. I never knew my father. He was murdered before I was born. I was raised as a pit bull. Raised to fight to the death. Four times I was declared dead. Four times they wanted to pull life support. And many more times I came close to dying."
