Like the majority of fighters he isn't entirely perfect against lefties. Has he shown improvements against them? Mayweather was able to counter off the backfoot out of his signature shoulder roll, something we haven't seen him do to southpaws prior. Was it just Ortiz that allowed him to perform the way he did?

I would say he has because of his ability to slow the pace down to his liking. Ortiz was trying to walk through Mayweather's punches, thinking that he doesn't have power but Mayweather's feints and subtle footwork (staying out of position to be hit) is still highly effective against southpaws. Damn! I can't find any Mayweather-Judah .gifs to further explain.

Difficult to say from the Ortiz fight considering Ortiz is a right-handed, right hook dominant come forward southpaw, whereas Judah is a left-handed, straight left/uppercut dominant counter-punching southpaw.

Just because they are southpaws doesn't neccesarily indicate they present the same stylistic problem, Ortiz presents a different problem to Judah just like Marquez presents a different problem to Margarito

However I would say a lot of the things he attempted to do early on with Judah, worked better and looked more efficient vs Victor, but then Judah > Victor so it's hard to say

May receives a fair bit of criticism (from those who actually notice it) for not getting his lead foot on the outside vs southpaws

He actually half-steps outside when he counters their own attempted shot and throws his own, as opposed to constantly staying outside.

His footwork has improved, it's excellent. Half-stepping, pivoting, constantly sets traps with it.

Well every fighter fights different and the same rules apply with leftie but Floyd adapts well so i will say that he has.

I think people have always just dramatized Floyd's apparent "weakness" to south paws when in reality he was probably just as effective, if not more, than most fighters. I just think the contrast between orthodox, where he seems able to essentially toy with opponents, and SP seems bigger because of his particular skill set. Floyd get's hit from orthodox fighters just as much as he has from SP fighters. It seems we now know this was a bit of a weakness that wasn't all that weak and a little overblown. Kind of like the misconception that Floyd doesn't use the shoulder roll against SPs.

Didn't really answer the question..my bad

off course but hes maxed out in improving in his career its only down hill from here . his fights getting closer n closer in comp . mosley, victor , an cotto. each of those guys gradually made floyd fight more and the fights were closer.

I would say he has made some improvements. But lets face it Judah was spanking that ass beautiful early on.
Sure Mayweather did make adjustments but his success in the fight I feel had more to do with Judah's poor stamina and weak mind.
A smart, slick southpaw will always give Mayweather some trouble.
    Martinez is the closest thing

And no Pac is neither smart nor slick so forget it.

Ortiz is light years away from Floyd in terms of skill and general quality as a fighter. The southpaw stance can be a useful bonus, but if you're completely outmatched in most areas then it's not going to help you much at all. Floyd was supposed to embarrass Ortiz and completely outbox him. The only way they could even try and sell the fight was by concentrating on Ortiz's youth, and that he was 'hungry'.

The shoulder-roll is open to the straight left. Floyd relies on his high guard more these days (probably due to age) but he's always at his very best when he uses his natural shoulder-roll style. The high guard is his secondary, less impressive but still serviceable form of defence. It makes it easier for him to block fast punches (as he's not relying on reflexes and rolling/twisting away) but it also limits his vision, agility, and leaves him more open to body shots. Blocking is also less desirable than completely dodging punches, because you might still get hurt or worn down through your guard.

mayweather can do what he wants when he wants. just because you have not seen him doing does not mean he cant. i have seen mayweather do it all south paw or not, the **** that surprises most people like holy **** how did he do that.9 out 10 i can name a fighter he performed it on first.its not hard for folyd to figgure someone out.maul and brawl is how 90 percent of people try to fight him.pacman will share the same fate as the rest if timothy dont spoil the show.

A tall southpaw fighter with speed usually holds the advantages over a short orthadox fighter, regardless of how good they might be unless of course they are a phenom like Pacquaio.

This is why a fight with Martinez would be a nightmare for Floyd.

The big glitch on Mayweather's resume is that he has never faced a tall fighter with a longer reach and a great jab.

He has an opportunity to face a guy like this if he fights Martinez next who says he will take the fight for $10.
