How do you rate Joe calzaghe's chin he went down a couple of times in his career but never really seemed hurt.

Does steroid use have an effect on chin?

When a boxer absorbs a series of power punches from a good punch, let's say, 8-10, over the course of the first couple of rounds and then succumbs to a combination from teh same fighter in the third, how do you denote that fighter's chin?

  5. Good question rocky1. In his earlier days his Chin was cast Iron. But as he got older his punch resistence diminished. He still had a good Chin but did have the propensity of hitting the canvas. He retired at the right time as the right fighter might have cracked it.

His worst KDs were against Byron Mitchell and Roy Jones. He seemed hurt on both occassions but his instinct was to get up, dust himself down, and fight fire with fire. You have to respect that.:****off

So overall, Calzaghe had a decent Chin. Not Iron like other mainstays in his division (Froch, Kessler), but his amazing recuperative powers always saw him come back strongly. :deal

We both know it's not glass, McG, in fact we both know it's at least average at world-class level, but hey, let them believe what they want! :conf People should really listen to guys like McGuigan, who know their stuff, who aren't fans of that fighter, who tend to make their views on this subject very clear
    post-fight. :)

    ;)

  8. Vidic, a case in point would be Fernando Vargas. This man was roided up to his eyeballs, so much so that rumour has it he would **** liquid nandrolone instead of urine.:-(

None of which prevented him from getting brutally and embarrassingly KO'd by ODLH. :deal

So, although steroids can help a fighter with stamina and pain tolerance, if they have a Glass Jaw, they have a Glass Jaw.

  10. That's a tough one McGrain. It's obvious their Chin isn't complete toilet paper as they could withstand some punishment. But their inability to avoid these shots indicates A) A Lack of talent B) A lack of defensive ability or C) Their legs have gone due to punches received.

If it is C, then you would have to have them down has being Glass Jawed, although obviously at the lower end of the spectrum. :deal

So, absorbing punches does not help to adjust how chins are percieved? In other words, if a fighter is taken out by a hard punch from another fighter, he is categorised as glass jawed regardless of the other punches he has absorbed

People who take 8-10 flush power-punches from a fighter with good power per round for 3 rounds before going down/succumbing, cannot be glass-jawed. If such a fighter is glass jawed, he would succumb after the first few flush power-punches from a fighter with good power. Unless... you have only two categories of fighters: glass-jawed (95% of fighters) and iron-jawed (5% of fighters), with nothing in-between.

  14. Like I said McGrain, there is a spectrum. Someone like Roy Jones Jr is clearly off the charts as he regularly gets brutally KO'd by one punch. Now someone who can hold on a little bit longer obviously doesn't have as weak a Chin as that. But the whole point of boxing is to make it the distance of 12 rounds. If you can't because of punches administered to the Jaw, and if that Jaw cracks, then by definition that fighter has a Glass Jaw. Glass Jaws exist in boxing.

As we all know, once they crack they don't come back. :deal
