This is why I come to ESB. I wouldn't have known about this any other way.

I'm picking GGG, dependent on how he copes with Pirog's defense, which I assume will be on point for the fight due to Golovkin's well known power.

Yes. I'd be surprised if Pirog was bookies favourite. I'm hoping he is, I'm very confident of GGG doing the business against Pirog.

GGG gets to Pirog by rounds 7-10, TKO likely IMO. Pirog let Ishida rack up 50% of his power shots on him, and he ain't gonna get away with letting that happen vs. Golovkin...no way.

    Golovkin KO.

Pirog has not built upon nor really looked anywhere near as fantastic as he did when he faced Danny Jacobs., He showed glimpses in that fight of being an elite level talent, the way he picked apart a fellow prospect like Jacobs was a wonderful thing to watch. Since that performance he has looked flat and rather uninspiring. The more i think about it the more im beginning to believe that performance against Jacobs may have been his ultimate moment and that instead of being this highly touted fighter that will shake up the division, he is merely keeping the belt warm for a more hungry fighter to come along and snatch it away from him. On the other hand you have the theory that it may have been a struggle for Pirog to really get up for the previous 3 fighters as they have hardly been of world class standard, perhaps the fight against Golovkin is the fight to get his juices flowing again. He showed against Jacobs that he definately possess talent and a certain versatility and awkwardness that not many fighters can lay claim to. Against Jacobs he was happy on the backfoot, frontfoot, on the attack or simply defending himself, his unusual mismash of slickness and European style boxing really threw Jacobs right off his game.

The fight itself is a fantastic one and not something that many fans myself included would have been expecting, both guys have struggled somewhat to get that big fight or in Pirogs case that second big fight, It was suprising that either guy is willing the prospect of being back to square one with not really anywhere to go, so props must go to both for this fight being made.

I see the fight ending by KO around the 8th round in Golovkins favour due to Pirog's less than inspiring form as of recent. GGG may struggle at first to time the awkward, lanky and often slick Pirog at first, which will lead the fight becoming very cagey very quickly, i dont think either guy is going to go looking for the other one early. least not Pirog who will be very wary of Golovkins impeccable timing so will be content to box behind the jab for a few rounds. Golovkin will be happy seeking those openings and trying to find those openings and holes in Pirogs defence and overall game, this may lead him to be behind at the halfway stage of the bout due to Pirogs higher activity. First half of the fight i see being quite uneventful with Golovkin happy hunting and Pirog happy working behind the jab. I believe however that Pirog will struggle to land anyhting telling whilst Golovkin will be landing the odd sharp shot here and there. Pirog will begin to become fustrated around the halfway stage and will look to press Golovkin and land telling punches to try and secure a lead on the cards, this is when i believe GGG will come into his own, he will begin to punish Pirog every time his defence becomes lax, everytime he puts a foot wrong , everytime he trys to pop GGG hard he will get something spiteful back. Much like we saw on saturday Golovkin will begin to bully the aggressive counterpuncher with counter punches of his own and much like a more finely tuned Cobra he will punch the remaining defiance out of Pirog for an emphatic 8th round stoppage.

    agree or disagree, feedback???

    Thanks!

It's easy to read from this script, and very tempting.

    My questions are:

    1. will GGG go into the fight allowing himself to be outboxed because he will wait to figure Pirog out, knowing that eventually he'll start timing him? In my view, if he can do more than that, he should try to do more than that, because it's risky not to. The Pirog against Jacobs was very easy on the eye, and the judges are going to score round after round for him. So, will GGG actually try to be more active, to try to outbox Pirog?

    2. Given that GGG has very good power and is a killer-finisher, will Pirog take the risk of letting his hands go as much as he did against Jacobs? One slip and he would get punished hard! Perhaps that will make Pirog a bit more weary, making it even easier for GGG to look to box him.

What I'm saying is that it could be that in the first few rounds, we'll see more of chess-like boxing match than we'd expect. It might be that Pirog forces GGG to move forward, looking to counterpunch. That would seem like a better strategy than allowing GGG to counterpunch him instead. Perhaps Pirog will get on his bike and try to win a close decision on the cards. I expect GGG to box more than usual and Pirog to be more weary and less fluid than usual.

    What do you think?

But yeah, I think GGG should be the clear favourite here. His boxing skills are clearly underrated, in my view. He is first and foremost a boxer, not a puncher.

It's interesting that Pirog looked his best in his biggest, toughest fight. He's been underwhelming against non contenders. GG has looked great beating up on bums, but he looked like a toughman against Ouma, who was a legit fighter years back and a div lower.

    Thanks for responding!

    1. I think as both of us have stated that the fight will be more of a chess match early and rather uneventful. Pirog will be happy being on his bike, constant movement and an active jab to keep the smaller Golovkin away. GGG strikes me as a very patient, thoughtful fighter, i believe as risky as it is that he will be happy to work out Pirog for maybe 2 or 3 rounds before he begins to try and attack Pirog with sharp counters and thoughtful attacks. By the 6th or 7th round i believe Golovkin would have started to time Pirog and make him pay for those flaws and holes he has in his game. Essentally i think GGG willl lay the foundations early to build upon for the middle to late rounds.

    2. Having watched Pirogs performance against Jacobs a few times its clear that he is very game and that the few times that Jacobs did get some good work done he was very eager to even the score. That kind of a attitude will ensure Golovkin has his chances to nail Pirog a few times even early. If Golovkin keeps his defences tight and doesnt let Pirog land anything telling i believe Pirog will begin to get fustrated and thus will become a little more ragged, too eager to land something big and too predictable with his attacks. All those roads lead to more chances for GGG to pick him off with his sharp, spiteful attacks.

Pirog has a fantastic chin, but how will Golovkin react when he gets hit? Thats the big unknown. Gotta be weary of a fighter who steps up in class after steamrolling mediocre opposition.

Also to Dom1513, Pirog also looked fantastic against Martirosyan. I think Pirog will do very well in this fight and will take a close UD.
