If Duran Fought By Today's Standards

Not really I don't think he'd get **** on when he's facing guys he's not even supposed to be fighting. A slightly past his prime lightweight upsetting a younger,bigger, faster undefeated opponent in his prime pretty much like if Pacman fought and beat Floyd at 147. Afterwards, Pacman moves up 160 and thrashes Sergio Martinez's face and gives a great account of himself in a losing effort losing in a competitive fight. Then Pacman get's ko'd at 154 by IDK maybe a Lara or Canelo, and finally moves back up to 160 again beats GGG to win a championship belt at 160 like Duran did over Barkley. No, Martinez is not Hagler, Floyd is not Leonard, Lara or Canelo are certainlyNOT in Hearns league, and GGG tho potentially may become great one day hasn't achieved a career defining fight that would make him an immortal like Barkley has become by shocking the world. So YES Duran is a great fighter and that is why he gets a pass and this is without mentioning his reign of terror during his lightweight years.

 

I get what you're saying, but, because he'd likely beat the **** out of anyone in and around his division, I doubt he'd even give the internet-critics a decent excuse to bash him. He'd be displaying elite fighting ability and an attitude where he wouldn't even think about avoiding the best challenges. As long as you have those two things, the real boxing fans will find it hard to not like you.

 

Duran's career didn't begin in 1980. He already had 72 fights under his belt and an ATG legacy carved out as a lightweight with impressive wins in several divisions. If you don't know fighters such as Ernesto Marcel, Esteban DeJesus, Ken Buchanon, Carlos Palomino, Edwin Viruet and haven't seen 70s Duran, then it'll be difficult to appreciate him as a fighter.

He had twice the mileage and was fighting 12-25 lbs above his best weight against ATGs at their absolute peaks.

 

I bet he would also get criticized bad. Nowadays when fighters get knocked out he is immediately labelled as a fighter with GLASS JAW. Wladimir Klitchko still has the label on him considering that he has not been down in 7 years now. Victor Ortiz once quit, and until now he is labelled as a quitter. Goes to show you that you cannot please all of the people.

If Duran would fight today, he will definitely have a hard time on fighting guys like Cotto, Lara, and Martinez. I have Duran at top 6 on my all time great but I think he will also have trouble with Pacquioa and Mayweather.

 

He would have trouble with Pac, May, Cotto Lara and Martinez. Martinez would have been too big.

Aside from that Noob - **** off.

 

He doesn't get a pass, he's remembered by many for his "no mas."

You conveniently forgot that 72-1 record he compiled & his domination of the LW division for nearly 7 years before he even fought Leonard for the first fight.

haha at least he stepped up & fought the best of his era at higher weight classes unlike Floyd who waited until Mosley was 38 years old.
