Why was Greb ranked as no.1 so late?

His over the top, condescending style isn't the way to rally supporters for Greb's undeniable Greatness. It's a turn off. Clay Moyle has ten times the class and respect. Buy the Langford book. :good

Had it for awhile now, buddy...it is an excellent read and well researched! For the record, Greb is top five ATG without a doubt. IMO

Didn't realize so many still have sugar as the number one. Thought pretty much everyone had let Greb/langford/fitz taken that spot.

klompton has said even if film came out for Greb it wouldn't look like Pep or Robinson as greb's style was effective but not pretty. would it make much of an impression on people anyway?

Concerning newspaper decisions: can they be trusted if you want to give him a victory. for example Most say he won his fight against Norfolk in their second fight before he was DQ'd. But wasn't he doing that fight in his hometown, would writers criticize their own fighter? what are people's opinions. are the Newspaper decision just as good as official decisions?

I really think that Greb footage would look a lot more like the best of Calzaghe than anyone else.

I never heard him say that and if he did I can't say what he was basing it on. So I'll refrain from comment.

But what he says about the Greb-Tunney series is backed by PRIMARY SOURCES and cannot be taken with a grain of salt. The guy has done complete and thorough research on Greb.

"The second Norfolk fight was in Boston, not Greb's hometown of Pittsburgh. The consensus was that the out of shape Greb was losing that fight up until the DQ. "

How bout it surf? why do you think greb got his due years after he died?

Actually there is no footage of Robinson in his prime - i.e. at welterweight.

Well, Armstrong certainly gets his respect & he doesn`t fight like SRR or Pep.

There is a little footage of him at WW actually, there is also footage of him in the FW & LW golden gloves when he was a teenager & there is more than enough MW footage were Robinson was still prime aka not long after he moved up from WW to MW.

The Jake Lamotta performance alone when WW champion Robinson first won the MW title in 1951 in their 6th & last fight shows you just how good a prime Robinson was... we might not have caught the very best peak performances of SRR at WW vs Gavilan & co on video but there is more than enough footage to prove what people say about him & that is that Sugar Ray Robinson was the best fighter ever.

And the man I believe to the greatest fighter who ever lived is Harry Greb. Nobody before him or since him has done the things he did. He was merely a middleweight and he fought light-heavyweights and heavyweights all over the lot. And here is a guy with 300 fights.”

"That phrase, 'Pound for pound, the greatest fighter ever,' has been used by everybody to describe Sugar Ray Robinson,"..."I agree, to me the guy was the quintessential boxer. He believed that brawn and muscle were secondary, and in every fight, he would try to out think his opponent. For me the most outstanding test of his ability was that he lasted for 25 years. That type of durability has only been demonstrated by a handful of fighters since the beginning of time. He had the poise of a Shakespearean actor, poise you don't see today, he won and regained the title five times, and he fought against some of the best competition ever. Just look at some of the names on his record."
