I was comparing physical statures, not styles. Robinson came along when those fighters had for the most part seen better days or had moved to a different weight class. For example Lloyd Marshall was a light heavyweight when Robinson campaigned at welter. It's like calling out young Greb for not facing the top fighters of yesteryear, though I do agree that Burley was there to fight. Robinson had enough difficulties securing a title shot against the welterweight champ whom everyone thought would be mismatched if put against a far superior Ray Robinson. It wasn't all handed to him on a silver platter, and he fought a guy in Jake LaMotta whom the middleweight champions weren't looking to face. From highlights it seemed Robinson gave better than he took against Abrams, who was a clever spoiler. The crowd may have booed the dull fight and unimpressive performance as much as the decision. Greb had his off days as well, against Ted Jamieson, Jeff Smith, Soldier Bartfield and Mike O'Dowd. It would be wrong to say that Greb whipped everyone because Tunney, Loughran, Norfolk and Gibbons did trouble him in their series. He was hardly in his own class as a light heavyweight, only as a middleweight. Just like Robinson as a welter, a weight he never lost a single fight at.
Let me put it this way A. As a welterweight Ray Robinson who I saw at that time was second to none, with the possible exception to lightweight Benny Leonard. But as the fighter who did more amazing things, fighting bigger Hall of Famers, fighting almost weekly, ducking no one,in a 300 bout career, all these accomplishments, make Harry Greb,SUPREME...A,your a worthy opponent :good.
Senya, I stand corrected. It seems every era had fighters deemed best figher in the business, or "P4P",if you like. It seems that the old phrase, "a rose by any other name smells as sweet",holds true...It seems to me,who goes back a long time, that P4P expression became the mantle used to describe Ray Robinson ,most often.Cheers...
I think you should sit down & actually watch the last fight between Lamotta & Robinson (the only fight they had at MW by the way) & you might switch the words `struggled mightily` with `badly outclassed & beat up` Ive never seen Greb fight so cant annalyze this stylewise but Id pick that version of SRR vs anyone at 160... ANYONE.
Tough fight for both men...Greb has the stronger resume from 160 -175...SRR has the stronger from 147 to 160...I can not see either man dominating, Greb had success against some of the better men north of 160lbs, Robinson failed in his attempt at 175lbs with Joey Maxim...judging by Grebs resume and having spoken to some of the old-timers who actually saw him fight the guy was a phenomenon...SRR was also..the guy 122-1-1 before the Turpin fight...they could fight 10 times with mixed results..too bad they did not have each other to sharpen up on they would have been greater despite a few extra losses on both of their records.
Good post ... conditions such as the ring size and the ref and the fight he allowed are all huge parts of this ... Greb did fight the bigger, better men ...
W, with due respect, learn boxing history! It will help you.To say that Harry Greb was not fast and just a brawler, is akin to saying Joe Louis couldn't punch too hard ! Harry Greb was KNOWN for his blazing handspeed, and speed afoot that was called incredible by everyone in his day. No less a personage than Jack Dempsey, exclaimed "Greb was so fast, hell he's faster than Benny Leonard ". All his opponents were on the defensive, so fast and voluminous was his handspeed. And he could do this for 15 rounds, and he never gave his opponents the ball. Mix this with an unorthodox style, an iron chin, and a lust for battle, against, any style, any color, and any WEIGHT.Saying the immortal Pittsburgh Windmill, was just a "brawler", is akin to saying Enrico Caruso was just a SINGER. Cheers...
You seem to know a lot about the old time fighters but after seeing this blatant lie, people will now take your stories and experiences with a grain of salt. In relation to the thread Sugar would beat Greb, too fast and more power. No one rates Frazier higher for being blind in one eye so why should Greb be? Even if it is a remarkable achievement.
:rofl Robinson's place in the game is a irreversible as a fire extinguisher bludgeon to the face. :!: :!: :deal This content is protected
Smitty, what "blatant lie" ? Can't you know I was joking about being 18 ? Hell my clothes are older than 18 years...Lighten up...atsch
