I hear alot of People say it was the biggest sports event ever. im 15 i was not around then but i have seen the fight twice. Was anybody there? Or around then? If so what was the build up and Atmosphere like. I once heard bob arum say he couldnt even describe what it was like it was so big. Same Thing by butch lewis.
Wow, you're fifteen? I wish I was that old. haha. They let us drive at fifteen, here. I'm 12. I always wanted to know if boxing was real or like WWF back then because Ali and Wepner and everything was so crazy and they wrestled sometimes back then but I don't know anybody old enough to have been there but my grandpa and he can't even remember how to use the bidet. And sometimes he poops in the laundry. :sad2
I was 12 at the time, and this fight made me the over the top boxing fan I still am to this day. Hard to describe how big this event was, the anticipation was something I have never seen since. Back then, of course, there was no internet, no espn, no East Side Boxing, no nothing, so it was tough to get info. Still the biggest event ever, and unlike most of today's overhyped fights, it lived up to the hype, and then some. Beautiful fight!
I hear they were all over tvs in the paper and in Mags It seems there was boatloads of coverage it was the biggest fight ever.
Yes, of course it was well covered for the day, but still nothing like todays media frenzy would be for a fight of its stature. I had to listen to the radio for between rounds reports from a guy at the closed circuit viewing at the spectrum. But yeah, it was definitely well covered for 1971. Man, it was tough back then to get boxing news.
