I can think of a couple of fighters/styles that would give Wlad some trouble.

Wlad style is based on his size advantage. So one of the problem would be if his opponent is as big as he (and also had some speed and skills on top of that). Someone who can't be easily outjabbed from distance and hugged to death inside. Lewis would be obvious example.

Tyson was master at cutting the ring against larger opponents. I doubt Wlad could keep him away all the time.

Also, someone like Sanders would be always a problem for Wlad - big, aggressive southpaw with speed.

A short banger could have some success I feel, but he'd have to have the right combination of mental and physical tools to make it work. He'd have to walk that delicate balance between being close enough to land his own punches, but not so close that he's tied up easily inside. Quite tricky.

Sam Peter in the second fight tried to implement some bob and weave, but he was hoplelessly too slow moving in. Wlad had no problems whatsoever shifting backwards and keeping the distance, and pot-shotting Peter to death. Very demoralising for the big Nigerian.

Now perhaps a fighter with Joe Frazier's closing speed and ability to get in really low under a good deal of Wlad's punches could be a different story. He'd have to be prepared to take punches to land punches, and be very mindful of Wlad's ability to tie up inside. He'd have to dish out some dirty stuff, and try and take Wlad out of that comfort zone.
Wlad is not offensive-minded when retreating, and maybe a tenacious guy with fast closing speed could put him more on the defensive than he'd like to be.
I don't think that Wlad is at all interested in getting into a give and take type of fight. It's not in his mentality, and perhaps an opponent that has him constantly backing up, or backing up more than he'd like and not getting into a rythmn to set up his own offense, could have success.

But to finish him, you need to land. That's been a problem for the vast majority of his opponents.

    Yeah.

Wlad is one of the most fascinating champions in history IMO. His style is defined entirely by his weaknesses. HW champs, especially, tend to have their styles defined by their strengths, more so than fighters at other weights. But I can't think of a great at any weight so defined.

Anyway, he's developed this uncanny control of distance and tempo and general rhythm with good reason. I think what Wlad holds "raw" in reserve is not that impressive, though overall he is very impressive. Get to the raw you can have the title. So anyone that can take away that protective layer of control would beat him for me. He's so developed though, that only a genuinely world class fighter could do that now, and one with the right style, at that. I think he would beat the tar out of Jack Johnson Or Ken Norton for example and I might be tempted to make him a slender favourite over Larry Holmes now. That will infuriate many, but I feel it's reasonable.

On the other hand, I think smaller guys with the right styles - Joe Frazier or even Floyd Patterson - would get him. There are many who will find that equally offensive but for different reasons.

Like I say, an interesting fighter.

I pick Dempsey to beat Wladimir all day and all night. Saying so to the wrong guy makes him cry/furious though.

Yeah, very much agreed. He's extremely mindful of his own vulnerabilities, and that's a credit to him. A lot of fighters are either incapable of adjustiing or too stubborn and set in their ways to fully learn from their mistakes.

He's a bit of a strange one. To me, and if I read your post correctly, to you too, he is fairly average in many respects, but extremely good at what he needs to be good at.

One has to wonder if he's either a woefully underappreciated fighter or a good but not great fighter that has taken advantage of a really poor era. Maybe somewhere in between those two extremes.

No. If i'm not mistaken your list is head-to-head? I still think Dempsey in the top 3 is high but I too think he's a beast of a fighter. He's grotesquely overated in terms of his title reign, opposition and general legacy for me which is why I rank him so low and why I bang heads with the Dempsey Mafia so often, but as a fighter? At his best he's a bit of a horror.

And on paper, he's a perfect nemisis for Wlad. Well, maybe a bit small, but almost perfect.

I think he's both of those things, in many ways. Wlad wouldn't have thrived in many other eras because he just wouldn't have gottne the time to put the neccessary pieces together. He's very much a modern construction, of his time, as every HW champion should be.

I think Lennox could take Wlad in a few rounds.

Its hard to pick a style, simply because so much more than just style comes into it. Size, reach, speed, power, chin and so much more.
But i think Lewis is just perfect for taking Wlad early.

It is hard...it's just something I like to think about, because it's a problem that all of his opponents have had trouble with. I like to try and work out exactly how, from a technical point of view, a fighter deals with his dimensions and movement.

I tend to agree with your take on Lewis. Simply put, Lewis is as big as Wlad and technically very good, and that in itself creates problems Wlad has rarely had to deal with.
But also, the two losses Lewis suffered were due to big right hands, and Wlad has that. Interesting fight.
