He needs a meaningful fight now. Has done his year of rehab. Think Selby is going to go after the Euro so would expect the British or Commonwealth to be on Smith by Christmas

He never called Selby out wished him well and said he hopes to get the fight down the line all he can do is keep winning, thought he looked ok nothing great but the fight served its purpose to get some rounds, think he needs to go back to feather before he gets to comfortable at super feather

Ive got to honest here and i say this as a man who's followed Stephen through the ama's and have always been a fan of his

I was unimpressed at the weekend , and from the outside looking in , it looks like the Selby fight has taken a lot from him , if he can make FW the right way , i think he should think twice about Selby for now , if he's up at SFW i really like the Liam Walsh fight

If I'm picking the rematch , I'm going for Selby in better fashion than last time :deal

He wants Selby but he's concentrating on his own career, i personaly think he's at the wrong gym and if he gets back to his boxing he beats selby

He was getting hit with counters from the dude he fought. His head movement is poor and is still reckless, Selby would KO him again.

He needs to decide whether he's staying up a 130lbs or dropping back to feather. If he's staying up I'd like to see a Walsh or Appleby fight and if he's dropping down I want to see him taking on Martin Lindsay before he gets the Selby rematch. In my opinion he's done nothing to earn the rematch yet, Selby was winning comfortably and then knocked him the **** out last time, beating a couple of bums doesn't put you back in contention to face a guy who did that to you.

The first thing he needs to do is leave Gallagher.

It's just not working out at all - he's gone backwards at a rate since he went there.

He gets hit a lot, both with leads and counters, as mentioned his head movement is non-existent.

Unless the change is made he's going to suffer regular KO losses throughout his career. Simple as that.

A fighter as weak as he is on the inside shouldn't even think about trying to fight in the Manchester type style. Simpson thoroughly dominated him in the close exhanges, it's something they need to learn and need to work on.

    Good post,
Steven should take a long hard look at how his career is going, and maybe a change in trainer would benefit him in the long run :good

He HAS to leave Gallagher if he's going to be successful beyond domestic level.

Swifty looked really poor the other night, he's a boxer not a ****ing brawler, wasted talent.

If he gets back in the ring with Selby he will get outclassed and sparked...again!

 I like Liam Smith, even though he isn't that good, he seems like a decent lad, Paul and Stephen are complete twats.

Any ideas who he could go to?

I'd suggest he goes back to his old amateur trainer.... you don't become a bad fighter overnight, some bad habits have crept into his work, and his weakness on the inside is proving his undoing.

Any time he comes up against a referee that will let the opponent work in close he'll struggle, even when he's levels above.

The problem is that it's not something you can teach, it's natural and learned from being a kid....

Agreed. Whilst it might seem like I've got an axe to grind with Gallagher, it ought to be blatantly obvious to him that the current routine they've got going on isn't working.

There's a difference between a ''pressure fighter'' like a Chavez or even a Hatton (who's basically a watered down version) - some clever movement inside and good fight.... and plodding, ''follow the opponent around whilst getting hit'' Gallagher fighters.

That style is alright for a John Murray, but a boxer or counter puncher should do things differently. Not many trainers can train ALL kinds of fighters.

Steward likes tall jabbers with the emphasis being on back hand power shots
Beristain works best with technical boxer punchers like Lopez and Rafael Marquez
The Ingles prefer loose limbed, fleet footed guys

and so on. Roach might be the most versatile, but his fighters still get nailed with uppercuts if they've an opponent capable of throwing them.

    Probably a thousand times :hey
