Having moved to Hong Kong last summer, I've now gone 11 months without seeing any live boxing (there has been one pretty low key card, which I avoided but Ricky Hatton was there). At the end of June that will change when I go to Macau (one hour ferry ride) to see Chauncy Welliver v Sherman Williams. I googled the fight but couldn't find anything at all on tickets or even the venue. All I good find was the date and 'country'. So I messaged Welliver on facebook and he replied immediately. He's actually a really sound guy but he didn't understand what was going on in the press conf so couldn't tell me anything about venue/tickets. atschatsch In the end, after a bit crack he offered me a couple of free tickets. Sorry for the waffle, what's your thoughts on both guys? I don't know too much about either but CW is top ten with WBC/WBO. No wankers please :good I might start one of those ***Chauncy Welliver Express*** threads :deal
He always comes across as a top guy tbh. I like the bloke more after reading what you put. Its nice that he takes an interest in his fans where most boxers would of just ignored your question. :thumbsup
Yeah I didn''t expect him to answer really. He apparently posts on the Aussie forum too. It seems unusual his situation. Fighting in and around China and building up his ranking beating the Asian/Oceania fighters. Dunno what his fan base will be like in China though :think
And I might be wrong, but wasnt Sherman Williams involved in a no contest with Holyfield in his last fight?
Its either going to be a fanatical following, or he will more or less be unkown out in china, b ut i reckon that boxing will probably be pretty low on the list as they seem to be more about mma and sumo and professional wrestling out there
I remember Chauncy fighting Solis a few years back. Just two overweight guys and Solis had too much for him. Since then he's lost a fair bit of weight and has gone on a quest to pick up as many meaningless alphabet belts as possible (well not really meaningless since it's winning those belts that have got him ranked top 10 with a few orgs). He posts on ESB as well. Forgotten what his username is though.
Its an interesting route which will get him a big name before too long. There's a lot of potential for boxing in Macau, it being the gambling capital of the world, it could be as big as Vegas for boxing. The money is certainly there. The Chris John fight in Singapore was apparently a success (this was held in an elite casino/hotel). He could kind of pioneer this in Macau :think
He posts under the username Chauncy. He does seem a really nice guy and i'd love to see him unify the NZ heavyweight titles by battering Sonny Bill Williams. On a side note he revealed he had witnessed Vitali being knocked down in sparring. I forgot who he claimed was responsible.
He does seem a nice guy, lower-level HW but he might give some british level guys a decent fight. I'd like to see him against SBW, the guy is a machine but certainly no boxer and certainly can't go rounds IMO
Did you start a thread in the Boxrec forum about Welliver as well? :think He's far from the most reliable source but MesserStick claims that Chauncy's fights are broadcast on China's state-run TV channel CCTV and that Chauncy's fights attract 20 million viewers. I have my doubts as to how reliable this is but apparently he is pretty well known out there.
People forget Holyfield was on the verge of getting stopped by Sherman Williams Heard Chauncy on the On the ropes show, good guy :thumbsup
You seem to be comfusing china and japan there my friend! Pro boxing is fairly under-developed in china, i think chauncy's fights are broadcast on one of the cctv channels but not really sure how popular the fights are...
