Wow I did not know this, he had about 30 amateur fights, and apparently trained with Freddie Roach as a pro making a million in his first year. I think 8 pro fights, including sparring with Toney, and Tommy Morrison. Rourke had to stop due to facial injuries, thats why his face is fudged up. Im just a little shocked I never heard of this before pretty cool.
I heard he was dirty as ****. I remember him discussing sparring with Hearns and what he says is he got dropped with a right and went home, went to sleep, woke up extremely nauseous, vomiting, scared, tried to call 911, couldn't remember how the phone worked, and it turned out he had a concussion, from what I remember him saying. True, I don't know. :err
It is interesting. I have known about this for a long time, except for the million dollars part. He was an actor with a nice face (no homo) and became a pug with a smashed face. His face looks even worse now, due to the plastic surgeries. The ex-boxer look worked for him, especially for his role in Bullet. I loved that movie. Mickey Rourke is an awesome actor.
i heard when he quit boxing he sold all his equipment to freddie roach and that's how the wild card gym was born.
He had some fixed pro bouts. one fight, his first, was big news, guy he fought took worlds most obvious dive. There was a scandal few years later, some of guys he fought were involved in taking dives. I like him as an actor, he was great in The Wrestler. But the 30 amateur fights thing sound like he's bullshiting.
some of his fights where fixes. or at least brought a guy to the arena [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2edjrB2UWA"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2edjrB2UWA[/ame] stopped doing the amateurs due to concussions and there where a few stories of him getting knockdown again and again etc. he said in an interview that had he won another 3 fights the wbo cruiserwight champion would of wanted to give him a chance. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OW3zWZ12ZZY"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OW3zWZ12ZZY[/ame] here is the supermiddlewieght champion of the world....getting overshadowed by mickey rourke.
while james toney can't be mistaken for scholar he certainly spoke more clearly compared to these days.
compared your clip to this clip.:-( [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T4BaWnAxLQ&feature=relmfu[/ame]
In that video of Rourke fighting, he ko's guy with a wrist to the hair, a great punch only a few can master.
If any of his fights were fixed I doubt Mickey was aware of it. I watched one and was extremely disappointed. I don't think he ever fought anything but 4 rounders and the fight I saw was very ugly and scrappy. I know he's said he could have gotten a shot a title but I always assumed it would have been a regional at best. Can you even get ranking if all you do is 4 rounders? Didn't he get down to super middle by the end? He got pretty skinny.
Randall 'Tex' Cobb was another boxer turned actor - had a pretty decent resume too. Fought the likes of Earnie Shavers, Ken Norton, Leon Spinks, James 'Buster' Douglas and Larry Holmes. Only knocked out once and finished with a 42(35)-7-1 record. Worth a thread of his own......Hmmm This content is protected
Rourke made an honest go of it as a pro, but no doubt there was some shady business regarding one or two of his opponents, who were strongly suspected of being setups with fake records. I don't know whether he was aware of this or not, but his career can't be taken seriously. He did get in the ring, go through the grind of training etc. all while being a big-name actor. Give him credit for that.
