hi i recently started working with a european coach,
he is not the first euro coach i had but this one

more so then others is obessed with the right to the body,
    and works on it alot

i know it can set up a hard left hook or if that is blocked
    a hard jab

but he keeps saying how it is super power punch and does a lot of damage.

but i kinda disagree and think a left or right hook to the body is a better shot.

also i find that i dont have trouble countering the shot

anyways i think it is a good punch but not some super weapon

    what do you guys think?

When I boxed amateur, my coach stressed the use of the straight right to the body, especially the solar plexus, when being rushed by a somewhat wild opponent or if the opportunity arose fighting better opposition.

When it connects right, it is a great weapon and I stopped a few guys dead in their tracks using it, with one hitting the ground sucking for air for half a minute.

I believe you can generate more power with the straight right than the left hook if you are a conventional fighter and your right is your power hand. Not everybody can throw a hard left hook.

i can tottally see what you saying
and i got hit with a similar shot like the you time your talking about

    but i sometimes feel that
my head is in a safer place throw a hook to the body
    left or right
because it is not in the center usually

feint with jab to the head and right straight to the plexus or stomach.. if you sit on the punch you can do really hard damage, when your opponent cant decide, to **** or to puke :)

That works like a charm. The guy I put on the canvas for half a minute was done in with a jab feint and the straight right to the solar plexus. He was a bit predictable after the first round and it seemed every time I threw a jab, he'd throw a jab right behind it. So I feinted a jab and when he came with his, I ducked under it and shot that straight right, and down he went. I knocked the wind out of him so bad he just laid there for the longest time trying to get his breath.

i think the left hook/uppercut to the solar plexus is a better shot,,,,i proffer to teach ,,step in with the front foot with a jab then push of the back foot with a straight right to the jaw

The straight right to the heart is the natural counter for the left jab. If you are having trouble getting around an opponent's jab, that is the way to go. Slip inside the jab, step in and drive the straight right to the heart; you can even cover his right with your left glove if it makes you feel safer. It gets you inside, and it will definitely shorten an opponent's arms.
It is an excellant counter punch, very effective if targeted to the solar plexus, and usually easy to land in an era where so many stand square up with their elbows in and gloves alongside the head.

it is a great shot, I used it all of the time.... dont forget about the jab to the body aswell. make your opponent have to defend more than just 1 area. start landing the blows and it not only takes some wind from your opponent but will also show you lots of oppertunity and holes to punch through.

I would say great punch but harder to do if your much taller than your opponent.

I've just revisited this punch as a weapon in my arsenal. Being an inside fighter and a left-hooker I prefer liver shots but the times i've really really hurt people to the body and dropped them hard is with a straight right hand to the pit of the stomach. Im short as well so I can throw it practically at eye level when i bend my knees. Sit down on it, throw the hip and shoulder in to a straight shot and try to punch a hole through him. I always feint with a jab upperstairs before throwing it. Its overlooked imo

Love setting it up with an upstairs jab feint myself. Definitely an underuse punch.

One of the best at it. I remember when he dropped Barrera with it; it looked so unusual to see him simply knocked over at that angle.

It's a ****ing great shot to close distance. Just lunge in with a 1-2 and drop the 2 downstairs. They see it coming and block high (if you're slow enough ;p).

Great shot for guys who shoot a jab out every time you throw something.

As for damage, it can hit a number of organs and it just ****ing hurts.

Then it sets up the hook, right hand upstairs, etc. Really good setup punch. Just watch getting timed on the way in (you're swinging your head right into the path of a right uppercut)
