They weren't Jewish,M-- no matter how far it was traced back -- pure BS. It was just PR hype. The center of the boxing world at that time was New York City, with a large Jewish population, 'n rabid fight fans.

Promoters, more than anything, wanted to sell tickets. That myth put asses in seats.

additionally, George Gretting and Tom Pipes traded the title after Figg retired. it's unclear how many times since the chronicles mentioned they were 'alternate' victors.

coincidentally, Ned Sutton is listed as beating Figg before he retired, however it was most likely in a cudgel match, not with the fists and Sutton is the only man generally regarded as beating Figg. Taylor beat bot Pipes and Gretting, winning the title who then lost to Broughton.

the mid 1790's are another contentious period. Tom Johnson cleaned up the sport with his clean fighting and winning on the square, and received general acceptance as champion, and was defeated by Ben Brain. Brain however died before he could fight William Wood, and some historians regarded Wood as champion. I don't know why Daniel Mendoza has been universally recognized as chamion so soon after Brain's death. He forfeited a stake to fight Bill Hooper and then defeated William Warr (who he had already beaten) to 'gain' his status. John Jackson then beat the **** out of Mendoza by grabbing his hair to keep him still and then retired. Thomas Owen is listed as champion by beating William Hooper (who beat Will Wood) and lost his title to Jack Bartholomew who lost to Belcher. the title has been traceable fairly clearly since then.

You will briefly see the footage of Kilbane vs Atell fight in this video around 3:54.

I think there is an event starting today in Achill, Ireland commemorating Kilbane and they might show all the existing footage of the fight there.

Johnny Kilbane Weekend / Kilbane Clan Gathering
7th - 10th June 2012
Johnny Kilbane was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1889 to an Achill emigrant, John Kilbane, and a Cleveland-born mother Mary Gallagher. Sadly his mother died when Johnny was three years old and his father went blind a few years later, so the youngster was forced to leave school early and work as a labourer. Johnny also took up boxing and in 1912 he became World Featherweight Champion. A victory parade was held in Cleveland for Johnny on St. Patrick's Day 1912 which was attended by 200,000 people. After retiring from boxing, Johnny entered politics and ultimately became a senator and state representative in Cleveland. He eventually held the post of Municipal Court Clerk.

To mark the centenery of Johnny Kilbane's first world championship success a long weekend of events is planned in Achill, home of Johnny's father, from 7th - 10th June 2012. This event includes a clan gathering of Kilbanes, to which all family members are invited. Registration for the Kilbane Clan Gathering will take place on the evening of Thursday 7th June 2012.
