Could we envisage a way for Louis to learn the painfull leason without getting the 0, say vs a good but lesser fighter? I do wonder if anybody other than Schmeling could have pulled it off. Obviosly if Louis gets away with it relativley easily, then the bar for upseting him falls lower. If you loose focus far enough you will loose in any era.
Is true that Jack Johnson helped Schmeling in the preparation to the first Louis fight ?? I heard that years ago in a doc....never confirmed....
As far as I can tell, it didn't happen. There was a similar rumour that Gene Tunney helped Louis to prepare for the second fight, also likley apocraphal.
Joe's best performance, besides vs Schmeling 2,..was surely against the other Max...and he never fought that way again..moving so lightly on his feet..putting it all together like did so seamlessly...he was the BOSS vs Baer. The almost perfect fighter, IMO.
His rematches. Guy was a monster if he underperformed and you had to face him again maybe besides Walcott II though that was still a ko and a decisive victory unlike the first.
