I have three more rounds to watch tomorrow. After the point deduction to Chavez I have Laporte ahead by a point. I somehow missed this and Chavez vs Lockridge the first time around. Any memories of your scorecards for these two fights.
7-5 to Chavez against Lockridge I can´t remember about Chavez vs LaPorte......I think I hadn´t any doubt about Chavez\ win....
Laporte looked a really good fighter when he pulled his thumb out of his arse.My first fights of his that I saw were against Gomez and McGuigan, and he didn't cover himself in glory in any of those fights. He was really impressive against Chavez and it was a hell of a fight with some vicious exchanges throughout.I had him barely losing, but I no longer have access to my old scorecards. I had Lockridge losing(8-4 to Chavez). An interesting watch for anyone who think's Chavez was lacking in versatility.
The thing about this fight that I remember was reading about it in KO magazine. (I didn't see the fight until years later.) KO said there were several close rounds that could have gone either way, had LaPorte winning by one point, and called it the robbery of the year. When I finally saw the fight, I thought that it was a very hard fought, competitive bout, but that Chavez won.
Chavez was clearly landing the cleaner shots in the fight. Laporte was with him trading shot for shot all the way, but the quality of punch was not quite there.
Scored the LaPorte fight a draw but there were multiple rounds that probably could have gone either way. Wouldn't consider it a robbery, obviously.
Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Juan LaPorte Always heard what a tight decision this was and I also remember Flash Gordon's old publication screaming that LaPorte was robbed. So here we go. Round 1: 10-9 LaPorte Round 2: 10-9 Chavez Round 3: 10-9 LaPorte Round 4: 10-10 Even Round 5: 10-9 Chavez Round 6: 10-9 Chavez Round 7: 10-10 Even Round 8: 10-10 Even (Chavez was winning this round until LaPorte really came back at the end to even it) Round 9: 9-9 Even (Chavez was winning but was penalized a point for a low blow) Round 10: 10-9 Chavez Round 11: 10-9 Chavez Round 12: 10-9 Chavez Total: 117-113 Chavez Never had so many even rounds. Great fight and the 11th and 12th were outstanding. LaPorte was the harder hitter and Chavez the sharper and busier. That was always the problem with LaPorte. You needed to set a fire under his stool to get him to throw punches. He could have taken this and I don't have an issue with people griping on the decision. Regardless of my score, it was damn close.
