Like all of us, I found myself thinking about the Pac/May fight again. I gave myself the satisfying mental image of Pacquiao landing a counter left straight and Mayweather being rocked, but then I backtracked and thought, 'Can Mayweather actually take a punch?". Sure, he got creased a little bit by Mosley, but anyone can get briefly tagged. His amazing defence sees him never really tested, so do people think he can take a punch or is he weak to it? It's pretty irrelevent since he might be the best defensive fighter in history, but just an interesting thing to get to the bottom of.
Mayweather has been fighting championship caliber fighters since 1998. He's won 8 world titles across 5 weight classes. He's fought plenty of big punchers. He's done all of this with only having 1 KD scored against him. His defense is great, but it's not that great. He's taken plenty of good shots, and reacted well to them. I think it's safe to conclude that he has a good chin.
Based on what we know, 43 wins and never being on the canvas, I'd say its pretty damn good, granted his defense makes it very hard to land a clean shot, but when he has been caught, he's dealt with it and made the adjustments. Not much else to say really.
Yeah I can't tell if he's taken clean big shots or he has been able to get himself into positions to stop them from being able to damage him the way they could. His shoulder roll is amazing at taking power out of things, even if they land flush on the chin. I don't think his achievements prove it because he's managed to succeed in them with ease.
Do you really need everyone to answer this for you? Mayweather quite clearly has a great defence and a solid chin, how many times has he been rocked and when he has is there any stand out moments where he struggled to recover from it. Nope there aren't.
He has a good chin but the thing that stands out to me is his recovery time. He's faced some solid punchers through-out his career.
Im not sure we've seen him take enough punishment to consider his chin as an iron one, however it's certainly a solid one.
The BRH that Shane popped Floyd with in round 2 would have put down a lot of guys at welter. It's solid.
I don't think he's taken a big punch and battled through it. He's never put himself in that position. That's why I ask the question. And none of them caused any problems... But yeah, that's what I'm trying to dicipher. Maybe he has a good chin and fast recovery time, or maybe he's able to defuse the shot before he takes the whole impact of it.
ESB's own Metal Mandible performed a full review and determined that Mayweather is an iron chinned warrior.
He's considered the best, undefeated, ATG, the guy could have a pathetic chin for all I care. To answer the question, it's solid enough.
