    GREAT story

there is actually a boxing club near my friend's house with a similar coach
the guy started out as a boxercise student and now he owns a boxing gym
    and is the head coach.

the only time he is know to have sparred
was with a 45 year old boxing rookie
    who broke his nose lol

yet he tries to teach people all this shoulder roll stuff lol
and talks about how many coaches lack knowelge

he makes his students spar after a 2 hour class full of intervals lol

    this is his place

and yes a student should listen to a guy who looks like
he lives in burger king about getting in shape lol

and the coach doesnt have to be ripped
just dont look like peter griffin from family guy

just out of self respect, the muay thai guy does not
let himself go, why cant the boxing coach do the same.

just like the skinny mofo teaching bodybuilding may in theory
know more about it then a pro bodybuilder
but who are you more likely to ask for advice on bicep curls lol

OK if i ever go to Toronto i will call at your gym ,,have a spar with you & then tell you where you went wrong

lazy jerk ??? ,,you couldn't be more wrong,,i will skip ,do the circuit training & put on the gloves to spar ,I'm an active coach that gets respect because i can do what the paying customer do

i will hit you with a right upper cut & tell you ,,how i got the power, how i made the opening to get contact to target & what you did wrong in your defense

so unless you are professional and pay for most of the coach's time,,you will have to take the advise as & when you get it

20%/30% is from the coach ,,,,,70%/80% is from the student on improving you boxing skills

There is a gym near mine and they get everyone to run in a circle in the ring and as they run past they punch the guy opposite in the stomach ha ha ha

They also block the jab and the right hand by karate chopping it away.

One of their boxers had paid something like £2000 for training for a white collar bout, then he was to sell tickets for £45 each and box for free. He came to me 7 days before his fight and had being training 3 times a week for 16 weeks. I swear hand on heart that I have lads who are more technically accomplished then he was after 1 hour.

Greed disgusts me- its the worse trait in humans and the root of all evil. Think about it.

Good luck with your goals of not progressing if you're only going to value the advice of those "in shape".

I think the most important thing in a coach is his understanding of biomechanics. If he can look at your posture, balance, stance and movement and tell you how to correct the issue you'll save possibly years of time wasted on less than optimal training and ingraining bad habits.
So many boxing coaches throw out cliches like 'move your head', 'stay on the balls of your feet', 'extend your punches more' etc. without being able to tell you how. They look at the symptoms instead of the cause. Anybody can be taught to be decent with a perceptive teacher.
Technique and motor learning is everything, a lot of boxing coaches think it's all about natural talent and conditioning. Natural talent isn't natural, it was developed somewhere along the way and most boxing coaches don't understand the basic principles of training. They think if their boxer is hurting and the more they hurt the better they are being trained. Stress and adaptation is conditioning. Coaches need to talk to their athlete about how they're feeling and let them have a say in their training if they want to prevent burnout.
So many guys I know have quit boxing all together because trainers don't understand that a certain volume of training might cause someone to overtrain while the same volume might not be enough for someone else.
It's all train hard everyday and do as I say when it comes to boxing coaches, that's what will kill boxing at the grassroots level. Less participants at that level and the smaller the sport will be.
Calm and knowledgable coaches get the best results, having a cohesive team in the training environment makes all the difference. The fat uncoordinated kid in the corner should be included and focused on as well, positivity influences participation and keeps people wanting to learn.
A coach should be a teacher, not a selector.
