    Following 20 year-old Cassius Clay's '4th Round' Knockout over
Detroit Heavyweight 'Six Gun' Sonny Banks, it was announced that
he would take on Canadian Heavyweight Robert Cleroux.

The 20 year-old, fast rising Heavyweight, at 11-0-0 {8 KO's) was now the
#8 Heavyweight. Still growing at 6' 3" 195 lbs., Cassius would take on
his toughest opponent, the bruiser Cleroux, a 6' 1" 205 lb. 24 year-old from Montreal, Canada.

The tough Canadian, at 29-2-1 (24 KO's), was a strong brawler, who could not only
whack, but could take a whack too.

Robert Cleroux, was the Canadian Heavyweight Champion, as well as the #5 Heavyweight
    in the World Rankings.

Unfortunately, this bout, scheduled for March 31, 1962 never took place.

    Not sure Frank.

Cassius Clay ended up taking on George Logan in California in April 1962.

Robert Cleroux had already stopped George Logan in March 1962.

So something was not lining up.

The Canadian Heavyweight was also supposed to fight 'Ol Man River' Archie Moore
in California in 1962 also, but that bout fell through too.

    Nightcrawler from the North,,

I do believe the Cassius Clay 'Louisville Group' were using Robert Cleroux's
previous 'victims' as a barometer for the Young Mr. Clay.

Willi Besmanoff (vs. Robert Cleroux 2/5/60)
Willi Besmanoff (vs. Cassius Clay 11/29/61)

Alex Miteff (vs. Robert Cleroux 6/22/61)
Alex Miteff (vs. Cassius Clay 10/7/61)

George Logan (vs. Robert Cleroux 3/5/62)
George Logan (vs. Cassius Clay 4/23/62)

And 'Ol Man River' Archie Moore was supposed to take on Robert Cleroux in 1962,
before he was to fight Cassius Clay, but he held out for more cash, and eventually got it versus Mr. Clay.

    Robert Cleroux, 'The Cassius Barometer'

Alot is made out of Ali fighting the likes of Frazier, Foreman, Norton, Quarry, Liston, Holmes, Shavers, Lyle, Young, Chuvalo, Ellis, Bonavena etc..

Notice a pattern here? A bunch of carefully selected oponents who weren't **** on the golden era Canadian scene of the 60's, couldnt brawl and couldnt punch. Ali had a glass jaw and that is why he danced around so much, afraid to get hit.

Cleroux vs Chuvalo III (August 8, 1961)

A North of the Border Heavyweight Battle,,,, between 'two' 23 year-old 'brawling-brutes'.

Robert Cleroux (W Split-Dec 12) over George Chuvalo

Robert won it clearly, 6-4-2 in Rounds.

    December 1961

Archie Moore signed to fight 23 year-old Robert Cleroux.

'Ole Man River' at age 45, was still a formidable foe for any Heavyweight.

Since the Floyd Patterson bout in November 1956,

    Archie had gone 23-1-2 (13 KO's).

He was still regarded as the Light Heavyweight Champion by Ring Magazine, and listed as the #8 Heavyweight.

Though Archie had all the tricks, I don't think he would have had enough left in the tank to hold off Robert Cleroux (at that time).

The Canadian by a stoppage (TKO 7).

Back then, Cleroux was as much an idol in his hometown as Chuvalo was in his. Their three-fight series was classic and packed them in like sardines. Many still argue over who was really the better man, but Cleroux did have a pretty decent jab and George had trouble getting past it. Too bad we don't have two guys like that around now.

As for how Cleroux would've fared against young Cassius, we'll never know. Eh?

I do think he had enough. Moore destroyed # 4 rated Alejandro Lavorante, a better fighter than Bob Cleroux.
