How does Ortiz get so much power on his punches from the way his feet are planted?

Because he usually throws punches from a tip toe position.

    Here's a video of what I mean!

His entire weight is behind his punches.

I'm a physio and he is getting his whole body behind his punches. I'll briefly go through some of the bio-mechanics (It could get a little more complicated but lets keep it simple). Early on he is punching high like he is fighting a giant! In doing that he is springing up as he is loading the punch - transferring the energy from his legs to his arms and hands on contact. Later on he is throwing single right and left hook/upper cuts and is using his body to generate more force differently. You notice that he takes a lateral step towards the side he wants to punch from and then winds up with a trunk rotation to that side before letting the punch go. That allows him to transfer the energy from his opposite leg with the lateral transfer and the energy for his trunk with the rotation before he even engages the energy from his chest and arms. No wonder its called a sweet science.

There are many ways to get power behind your punches, not just by using your legs. You can get a lot of power by just using your hips, even with a crappy stance.

On the vid he isn't trying to hit hard by the way, his main goal is to hit the targets (pads).

Well to start with i am not a boxing trainer! But bio mechanically the way your body work is like a sling. When you sprint or march to propel yourself forward you push off your left leg, lift your right to place and drive with your right arm slightly rotating at your trunk. So if your trying to load a right hand after a jab...............Throw the jab out transferring your weight forward. As your coming in to range and your weight is forward step forward with your right leg (to do this you are pushing with your left left) this is when you want to rotate your trunk from left to right whilst initiating the punch with your right hand.

This is a way of maximising your punch power. However, a boxing trainer may feel that when your stepping in to throw a right hand like that your open to a short left over hand.

some people do not need leverage or proper technique for power, some are naturally heavy handed and can knock you out with arm punches.look at George Foreman.Ortiz just seems like a tank of a man with huge fists

I'm not sure how to load video. But This vid of earnie shavers shows what you mean about loading from the hips.

You see time and time again here that he wants a big right hand. His footwrok is poor. Doesnt really step out to load a punch. what he does is use his hips and trunk rotation. Throws out a jab very upright then loads his right hand by standing still bending his left hip (this action is like slamming a door pulling his trunk forward and round to the right). That bending allows him to load the hand before its thrown.

The guy got huge calf and leg muscles. Power comes from you legs and he got huge legs. Probably from biking and surfing which he does constantly.
