If you "floor" your opponent, you cannot hit him when he's on the canvas.

To score a knockdown of one's opponent.

In boxing it usually means to get knocked down on the canvas from a punch.

In life it can be used instead of "being shocked" where horrible news can "floor" someone

Don't worry MW, only one thousand and twenty votes until you can claim a tie.

it can be used literally, as in, knocked onto the floor, or figuratively, as in taken aback by something. why is this being asked?

There are really TWO kinds of knock downs!

    1. Floored:

To be “floored” means that one gets knocked down, falling face first onto and facing the floor.

    2. Ceilinged:

To be “ceilinged” means one is knocked backwards and ends up on one’s back looking at the ceiling.

The following video demonstrates the TWO kinds of knockdowns.

First guy gets “FLOORED” and the second guy gets “CEILINGED.” :D

 I loved MichiganCheerleader's first response...

First suggests it's a Brit conspiracy, and then claims it's used in different ways in different countries, before giving that woeful example :rofl.
