This is a guy who barely beat Craig Mcewan, he lost to Vera too. Stewart, don't know what he was thinking when he tried to shove him down HBO's throat.

Remember he was fighting JCC Jr. that like all Lil Roach fighters seem to get bigger and stronger with time.

Manny Steward isn't so blind that he can't see Freddie Roach fighters use PEDS! Now there's news, hey?

Man I thought the same thing. I always thought that this fight is as close to a foregone conclusion as it gets. Lee was never anywhere near as tough as Chavez, and if the extremely limited punching bag Brian Vera can drag Lee into a braw and win, Chavex would eat him for lunch....which he did

Lee would've beat alot of other MW's that night. He would've put alot of them on their asses at that, but Chavez was just too damn big and that ring was way too small. Manny, Andy & Lou knew they were going to have to make all sorts of concessions in order to get the fight with Chavez, they were just confident that Andy would be able to hurt him and over come all that other crap. They gambled wrong.

I hope Lou doesn't allow the same stuff to go on with Martinez. Having the fight in Las Vegas is a good start. Less chance for wink-wink drug tests, no glove checks, weigh-ins, ring size, & Larry Cole.

Lee stinks. Steward can't make water into wine, or make Lee into Hearns.

why would he not try to shove a guy with clear limitations, down hbo's throat, if hbo's willing to accept him? emmanuel, in that case, is doing right by a person and fighter he cares about, in andy lee, who may have limitations but is regardless now receiving a rare shot at greatness, for someone lacking in one area or another.

furthermore, andy lee lost because he was overpowered and abandoned his gameplan of boxing on the outside.

This is what trainers do. They work with a fighter to try their best to make them better. It won't always work out. Remember it's a business relationship, but also can be a friendly one or even a father-son like relationship. And trainers may not always be looking to simply drop their fighter at the first loss or so. Andy Lee lost, but then came back. He was tested by Craig, but showed heart. That says a lot to a trainer and something they can't "teach".

I think Manny knew there was a very good chance Lee would be stopped by Chavez. . . But what's he supposed to do? Tell the media that? You gotta get your boxer paid (and yourself too). . You get a chance like that, you have to take it, even if it's on "Chavez's terms" (he's the cash cow)

I remember in an interview he did a while back about a fight with Martinez he said "Andy could give Martinez a lot of problems with basic boxing (which I agree)", and "nobody will outbox Andy; the only type of guy who could give him problems is a bigger, inside fighter" - paraphrasing, but that was the gist of it. . .

Lee doesn't have the stamina to keep up that high intensity style of outside fighting. . He needs to "stop" at times, and he doesn't have a strong enough guard, or strong enough punch for a guy like Chavez. . .

Lee's not a bum, Chavez is just a TANK. . Give Chavez props.

I honestly think the shots Lee landed on Chavez would hurt the likes of Daniel Geale.
you don't think he has a chance against the likes of Maklin, Barker, Pirog, Geale, Sturm?

I'm sure that Manny knew Lee's limitations, but expected (or hoped) to work around those shortcomings. Any trainer worth his salt -- especially a great trainer like Manny -- relishes the challenge of turning a vulnerable fighter into a winner. Such trainers focus on strengths, and analyze how they can utilize the strengths to compensate for the weaknesses.
