Boxing in America is done

    It will be a slow death, but I feel it's inevitable.

    The real problem is that the US can't produce a good heavyweight. I don't care about whichever excuse people choose to believe. It doesn't matter. Boxing is dying a slow death in the US and it doesn't seem anything can stop it. Once Mayweather retires it's over.

    Mayweather was huge because of he beat DLH. DLH was huge because he was a good looking Mexican-American who won gold with a touching story, and fought in a time period when the US cared about boxing. Mayweather will likely retire undefeated and never pass on that torch of "PPV king". In a previous time you could say "you never know who the next star will be", but in an era where boxing is dying, you really have to SEARCH for a star, and that's part of the problem.

    There are no more organic superstars. They are artificial; crafted by and for money. HBO is largely to blame for this, but really it's in their best interest to try and "manufacture" these superstars.

    UFC has proved it's not a flash in the pan. It's shown on major networks for free and gets huge viewers. Your average American is not talking boxing these days, they talk UFC. As disgusting as that is, UFC does a lot of things right. They don't have 20 ****ing belts for a single weight class (this is KILLING the sport). They don't have feuding primadonna promoters standing in the way of the best fights. Lastsly, no one really cares about the big "0".

    The "0" is part of what's killing boxing. Mayweather being PPV king has set a bad example for the future of the sport. Clearly, the 0 sells. Big time. Fighters not wanting to lose marketability end up not stepping up when they should, and wasting a lifetime of talent.

    The United States clearly has the talent to dominate boxing as it once did, but not the will or a way. Fighters like Ward and Bradley will never be stars. Unless you're a Heavyweight who is exciting or dominant, or a **** talking or very exciting midget, America isn't interested.

    well in a way i believe that since mma is still quite a new sport, the talent is quite shallow compared to boxing. You have one main promoter in mma who gets majority attention while in boxing you have arum, de la hoya and a bunch of other promotions by fighters.

    white just took advantage of the fact that the sport is still new, lets have one promotion where there is no co promoting allowed. In a way he's just as stubborn as arum but hes able to get away with it because the guy has the better fighters and knows how to promote his guys well. I never really followed any other promotion than the ufc when it came to mma tbh.

    Stop it. . . Boxing is a true international sport now, yes i agree. . . And i'm GLAD it is. . In fact, I'm getting ready to watcha fight on a Wednesday morning in Japan :)


    But America is still a major player in boxing, and always will be, heavyweights notwithstanding. . .

    You sound happy about it. If you're a fan of the sport you wouldnt be happy about it dying in the US, which like it or not is the home of boxing. But then again you're a clown of the highest order.MMA should suit you more

    good breakdown. we all know thats somewhat true, but have a hard time admitting it.

    I agree with most of what you say!

    you can add the government, taxes, and state commisions to the list of problems for our sport!

    Most towns in America cant produce local cards to promote local fighters and clubs...and make money.... due to all the regulations, fees, insurance, taxes, etc.

    For example: here in Myrtle Beach,SC Boxing is already dead. NC and SC boxing commision is made up of fat ex cops who know zero about Boxing and only exist to collect money. After you pay for the site fee, doctors, insurance, license, taxes... you have no money. No money for promoters = no cards. No cards = fighters can't make money. Fighters don't make money = they get 9-5 jobs.

    USA economy has gone to **** for the same reasons. Government needs to get its foot off everyones neck so we can produce jobs and make money.

    No. To save boxing in America, not that it's doing bad except in the heavyweight division

    , is to have boxing on regular cable channels, not Just HBO and Showtime, NBC Sports is

    already doing this, and ESPN2. Once HBO adds heavyweight boxing back to its cards, then we

    won't even complain.

    Boxing is going nowhere. Mayweather did not hurt boxing, he carried it for the last 10 years. And someone else will come along after him and Pick up the torch.

    And it wasn't his 0 that sold it was his talent.

    Lets see if MMA is still viable in 20 years.

    What America need is a true boxing saviour: a boxing ATG (defensively and offensively), a a warriour, a media icon and an action-figure hero all rolled into one.
