Bugner was a guy who never fulfilled his full potential. In spite of that I still rate him the third or fourth best British heavyweight of all time after Lewis,Fitzimmons and Farr.

I always considered that his manager,Andy Smith, brought him along wrongly. After going the distance with Ali (first time) and Frazier,he displayed signs that he would have stood a great chance against any fighter outside of the top four in Ali,Foreman,Frazier and Norton. He had the ability to beat the likes of Quarry etc. Instead,Smith returned Joe to the doldrums of European boxers and faded Americans such as Jimmy Ellis. This was no preparation for his world title rematch with Muhammad Ali.

In his prime years of 1973-77,Joe was a good fighter, but lacked the fire to match his talent.

HUMBLING SIR HENRY: Bugner, a 21 year old neophyte at the time, cleanly outboxed and outjabbed Henry Cooper in 1971. Joe clinched the decision with a two handed 15th round assault, during which he unleashed his slashing combination punching to the head and body. Should have been no controversy about this decision. Bugner clearly won it.

It always pisses me off when some claim that the result was a fix.
