Lets set the scene how it was at the time.

Ward had just won the S6 in overall impressive fashion, winning the WBC and WBA titles in the process.
Bute was an undefeated longer reigning IBF champ at the time, successful in 10 world title fights at SMW and although not with the name Kessler like Ward on his resume, had as many wins over top 10 rated fighters and had beaten common opponents easier and clearer than Ward.

Ward didnt seem to want to face Bute and seemed concerned about the prospect of doing so.

    Now
If Ward had of fought Bute before Froch beat him, would this have been Wards biggest win.
I recall so many at the time who claimed if Ward beat Bute it would elevate him to massive heights and that it was the biggest SMW fight about at that time. Many felt that Bute would be able to beat Ward.

So if Ward had of beaten Bute when he was an undefeated champ, would it have been considered Wards best win?

I think it would, but what do you think?

I think it would have been also.

Froch's biggest win is Bute IMO also.

Ward's win over Froch, especially the manner in which Ward won, now looks even more impressive.

Absolutely. That was the last piece of Ward's 168 puzzle (Bute's 0) and Ward missed out on it, which hurts a bit IMO

Definately Frochs biggest win and done in style.

I was at the event and the crowd was electric. I think this probably had an affect on Bute, though Frochs punches didnt help him much

You need to stop with the sensible chat and realise this is esb.froch the British fighter smashed the undefeated number 1 in the division therefore bute becomes a hype job!!

All joking aside ward would have been top 3 pound for pound.some fools on here have Bradley at 3!!

I still think due to the styles making fights and the fact that Ward isnt a massive puncher, that Ward/Bute is a 50/50 fight. I favoured Bute over Ward before Froch ripped up the script. But if Ward was in close, Butes body shot could come into play and Bute is more of a mover.
I still think its a good match up, but think now that any reasonable puncher who can walk through what Bute lands could trouble him now

Ward would have beaten Bute in a boring 8 - 4, type of decision.

In this process, Bute would have looked more competitive than Froch did.

People would have said Bute is #2 SMW in the world, and a top fighter but Ward is just another level to the likes of Froch, Bute and Kessler.
    ---------------------------------

But when Froch KTFO's Bute in 5 rounds, Bute becomes a glass Jawed hypejob. Bute is still a top class fighter, top 3 SMW.

oh it's definitely still a fight I want to see if Ward beats Dawson impressively and stays at 168. I've a feeling Ward will be kind of a dick in negotiations though since he's the champ and #1 guy, so I doubt the fight ever comes off.

It's lost real meaning for Ward too as even if he does beat Bute, ok? Most of his nuthuggers are already sitting on the "He already beat Froch he doesn't need to fight Bute" line now.

But he's fighting a more accomplished fighter in Dawson, how does that hurt Ward when he's about to fight a more proven fighter?? I never really understood that.

I do rate Bute, but think he met a fighter that was wrong for him in Froch, in that Froch could take it as well as give it.
I think Bute is still a top SMW and a hard fight for Ward. I see it due to styles being 50/50 because Ward doesnt have the biggest punch.

I highly rate Froch, but he can be so frustrating. When Froch is without a title and challenging for one, he is a completely different fighter who can look amazing ie Pascal, Abraham and Bute, but when defending he seems to take his foot off the gas.
If Froch fought with that intensity he would be very hard to beat and could give Ward a genuine arguement.
When they fought, Ward looked the more rounded better fighter, but I dont think it was the shut out made out to be.

    Just rewatched Ward vs Froch

    1st round even 10/10
2nd ward but not a big clear round 20/19
    3rd Ward 30/28
4th Ward clear round with alot of holding and leaning 40/37
    5th Ward 50/46
6th pretty even shaded for Froch 59/56
    7th Ward 69/65
    8th Ward 79/74
    9th Froch 88/84
    10th Ward close 98/93
    11th Froch 107/103
    12th Froch 116/113

I thought Ward won by around 3 points. I could make an arguement for Froch in round 1, which would only make it by 2 points like 2 of the judges saw it

Ward schooled Froch rather lopsidedly. 10-2 type affair.

    Knew that would happen.

I made this post asking that question well before Froch/Bute

fighting dawson completely makes up and then some for fnot electing to fight bute, not to mention, in retrospect, froch is actually his biggest win, considering froch was schooled by ward and froch demolished bute. no ifs, ands or buts will change that.
